There is a word in Ilocano called Kalinga which means warrior or fighter, an ancient word with Polynesian ancestor, which is highly appropriate for a village fighting to retain traditions for the Philippines.

During 400 years of occupation by Spain and the U.S., the Kalinga were one of the few tribes to not come under foreign rule, due to their fighting skills and contempt for outsiders.

But it is this spirt that can be seen across all of the Philippines now that has enabled old traditions to be kept alive and handed from generation to generation. Art and creativity is at our very core be that AI curated or hand crafted.

It is these skills that truly make us all human. I will be traveling up to the mountain village courtesy of Whang-od’s grand-daughter Grace and her husband Théo. I will be raising money for local educational projects and support for the village that supports women artists and passing the torch of succession. Please follow my video blog over the next 7 days and help support their cause.
