Nutrition Volunteering in Fiji

Hello! My name is Lisa, I'm 22 years old and Irish. On the 1st of June 2018, I will be travelling to Fiji to partake in the Nutrition and Public Health Volunteering Program run by Involvement Volunteers International. I am currently studying in the area of dietetics and I am greatly interested in the role of nutrition in overall wellbeing, health and disease. The prevalence of diabetes, obesity and cardiovascular disease in Fiji and other islands of the Pacific region is amongst the highest in the world. During my stay in Fiji, I will assist qualified health professionals to educate the locals about healthy food and exercise and to be aware about the role of nutrition in development of disease. General health assessments, workshops and presentations will also be carried out to school children, the community and workplace environments.

From studying in this area for many years, I am a strong believer that food and nutrition is the most important factor to prevent or in some cases reverse non communicable diseases such as diabetes and cardiovascular disease.

With your help, even a tiny donation will help me to deliver education to the people of Fiji. The more education that the locals receive, there will be a greater understanding how to prevent the development of such chronic diseases. Potentially, if put into practice, the quality of life could be improved and the prevalence of non communicable diseases could decrease.
