Campaign Story
There are an estimated 1300 Myanmar Chin and Rohingya refugees in Seremban, Negeri Sembilan.
They encounter healthcare expenses similar to Malaysians seeking private hospital care. While UNHCR cardholders receive a 50% discount at government facilities, refugees still struggle due to financial constraints. Many NGOs conduct health checks but further treatment is often unaffordable.
Over the past year, we've encountered distressing cases:
1. People with suspected kidney stones endure recurring clinic visits due to pain and urinary tract infections but can't afford necessary CT scans and stone removal, leading to ongoing suffering and unemployment.
2. Patients with recurring chest pain suggestive of ischemic heart disease can't pursue vital follow-ups and medications due to financial constraints, while caring for young children.
3. Newborns with congenital hypothyroidism face challenges in affording regular check-ups.
4. Babies failing hearing tests can't afford subsequent clinic visits for further evaluation.
5. A 10-year-old boy with micropenis and hormonal problems but could not seek further treatment.
In the last few years, I worked closely with UNHCR, local police and community leaders to assist with issues surrounding the refugee community. We dealt with issues like gender-based violence, child abuse and lack of education (learning centres). The most pressing issue is still unaffordable healthcare.
The funds raised will be used to assist refugees in need.
