If you think your contribution is too small, and the time spent is too long, or your word is not going to make much of a difference - you are wrong!

Mountains: a Journey of Hope in collaboration with Cyprus Girls Can is inviting you to join us for a delightful hike through nature, with breathtaking views in the Troodos Mountains to raise awareness and help support the Cyprus Samaritans.

WHAT IS MOUNTAINS: A JOURNEY OF HOPE?

Mountain: A Journey of Hope (MJH) is a mental health awareness campaign, which has as main goal to educate the public about the difficulties people with mental health related problems encounter and inspire them to reach out for help, improve the quality of their life through sports activities and dare to pursue their dreams.

WHY ARE WE DOING THIS?

According to estimates from the World Health Organization (WHO), depressive disorders are the fourth leading cause of the global disease burden. One in four people in the world will be affected by mental or neurological disorders at some point in their lives.

Over 800,000 people die due to suicide every year – around one person every 40 seconds. It is reported that 98% of those who died by suicide had a diagnosable mental disorder. Most suicides are preventable with timely interventions, however, only 1/3 of those who suffer from mental illness ask help.

During a research using data from 148 studies conducted in several countries, Elizabeth Walker, of Emory University in Atlanta, found that the death rate for people with mental disorders was, on average, 2.22 times higher than that of people in the general population. Same research revealed that 8 million deaths a year are linked to mental illness.

Often, when someone is suffering from a mental disease, they feel alone and left helpless in a dark place from which seems almost impossible to reach out, and almost unbearable to hang on another day.

We want to break the stigma on mental illness, and deliver the most important message needed to be heard: “YOU ARE NOT ALONE!”.

WHAT IS CYPRUS SAMARITANS?

Cyprus Samaritans is affiliated to the International Network of Befrienders Worldwide, which operates in 38 countries over 6 continents.

Their mission is to provide confidential emotional support to those who are feeling distressed, lonely or unable to cope. Trained volunteers provide listening over the phone (freephone 8000 7773, everyday 16.00-24.00) or face to face from their support centers in Paphos and Limassol.
