My name is Daniel, I am a Colombian historian interested in Modern European history (mainly 20th Century wars, personal stories during war time and the Special Operations Executive) and I am looking to start my PhD in the UK either in October 2019 or in January 2020. I have already been offered a place in a University in London and I have been looking for scholarships/studentships to cover either/both my tuition or my living expenses.

I found several of these studentships but unfortunately, and as I am neither a UK citizen nor a EU national, most of these options are closed to me (even though some of them are for projects directly related to mine). There are a couple that I could potentially apply for but they would entail waiting pushing my start date to October 2020 which, due to extenuating personal issues, is something I would rather avoid at all costs.

I am applying for study loan with a Colombian institution specialised in lending prospective students money for their university studies. However, said institution will only loan an amount which just about covers the tuition fees, and no other institution in Colombia will lend me the necessary amount of money to cover my living expenses. More so, and as my luck would have it, it seems that while I was studying my Master's in the UK, they changed some of their lending criteria and I may not eligible for another loan

Finally, there is another institution I could apply for a loan in order to start in October 2020. Unfortunately, this institution is deeply embedded in the political agendas of Colombian politicians which means that getting the loan is a huge gamble.

All of these reasons have led me to look for alternative sources of funding.
