Dalin, a 24 year old entrepreneur born and raised in Cambodia, created her own childcare centre about a year ago in the Phnom Penh area. She financed the place with her own money. Her project is to help the poorest children of the slum areas. She wants to offer them a place where they can study and learn in Khmer and English for children aged between 1 and 7 years old. These children currently get taken to their parents’ work, as they cannot afford to pay for the day care centre. Their parents do not have a job and work for recycling companies instead, going through rubbish all day long in the heat and rain taking their children with them. Although Dalin minimises the price of the day-care she still needs to charge an amount of money to pay for the amenities and herself. For now, there are approximately 25 children enrolled at the New Children Day care Centre. Their parents pay $15 per month. This is a considerable amount that parents working at the recycling companies cannot afford. Dalin currently has two children who do not pay any fee to study at the day care. She wants to get more kids. Her aim is to afford a safe place for the children to come to while their parents go to work and also offer them the opportunity to study to have a job in the future. She is lucky enough to get volunteers from overseas who come on a regular basis to teach English to the children. Today she needs a licence to register her day care centre. This is the only way for her to be able to expand the centre and get sponsors from overseas. This way she aims to get kids from the poorest families sponsored so they can come for free to the day care. This licence costs $800. This might not change the world but this project aims to support a young local entrepreneur who wants to offer a better life and opportunities to the children from the slum areas of Phnom Penh.
