Last March 20, 2021, our grandmother celebrated her 79th birthday. Lola Epe, as we call her, had barely any signs of weakness or disease. She was living a full life, dedicating herself to her family and her faith.
But along with many others, even if she had done everything to stay safe at home, COVID19 still got in her way and stole her strength.
After several days of exhibiting a number of symptoms, she finally tested positive for the virus. With the virus targetting one's airways, Lola Epe had begun to have difficulty in breathing and started being dependent on oxygen tanks to allow her to continue breathing. Our family since then has been doing everything to aid her situation.
After 5 long and difficult days of hospitals informing us they are in full capacity, searching for hospitals even beyond our locality, Lola Epe went into septic shock. Even if she was already in an emergency, the hospital situation in our region made it impossible to get her into one. Fortunately, a space in the emergency room of a nearby hospital finally allowed Lola to receive the immediate treatment she needed.
She is still in the emergency room of the hospital as there is still no space in the ICU. This is the reality of her situation and so many others. With her lungs barely functioning, she is now fully dependent on a ventilator and undergoing dialysis because of an acute kidney injury as a complication.
Just the other day, the doctor had our family informed that her vitals are already dropping. She is also now dependent on a medication that halts her blood pressure from completely dropping.
We know that she is raising against time and life, but we are not giving up on her just yet. We are still in faith for a miracle for her to conquer this.
But our family cannot do this alone. Along with the physical, emotional, and mental battle that we are all going through, comes the increasing need for financial support. At the moment, her stay in the ER in a day alone skyrockets to 150,000 pesos. In a matter of 4 days, the hospital bill has already gone up to 500,000 pesos.
A list of some of her medical expenses includes the following:
1.) ICU stay - 50,000-70,000 pesos per day.
2.) Hemoperfusion - 70,000 pesos per session (minimum of 4 sessions)
3.) Remdesivir medication - 10,000 pesos per dose (usually given at 10 doses)
4.) Central Line insertion (access for dialysis) - 35,000 pesos
5.) Diagnostic exams (laboratory, medications and medical supplies) - 5,000-10,000 pesos /day.
These are just some of the expenses needed. By next week, we have been informed that we might be needing more than a million pesos for hospital expenses alone.
We know that there are also a lot more lives being stolen away by this virus. Our heart goes out to every family also experiencing the same situation and even more difficult circumstances.
As one of the families being affected by this circumstance, we ask in humility for any amount of support that you can offer for us to be able to extend Lola Epe's life. We believe that she is still fighting with every ounce of strength that she can give, and we hope you can help us fight alongside her. We believe that we can conquer this fight together. Your generosity will leave a lasting impact not just on Lola's life, but also on our family. Thank you so much and God bless.
