My name is Suresh Chandrasekharan, secretary of a local land library named Bodhi, in a village called Chemmanadu in Ernakulam Dist, in the Southern most state of India called Kerala. We are operating from a small rented room in our village for the last 2 years. In addition to renting books out, we do various community and cultural events for local kids, youth and the elderly. We got more than 4500 books in our library and currently facing lack of space in our small rented room to accommodate these.
To accommodate this growth, we are building a local land library building The aim is to help rural kids to have a positive place to get together and have a sense of community. We feel that the creep of social media to mobile phones is a big threat for kids to have a normal childhood, where they need to interact and play with other kids, read books and have some real life leadership skills get imparted in the process.
Through local donations, we bought a piece of land more than 1500 sq. feet in size.
Again thru donations we are constructing a 850 sq. feet building in the above piece of land. Completed more than 50% of the building as well, we need support from folks sharing the vision that facetime and interaction with fellow beings is the greatest source of happiness one can get, not by staring into the little screens as the life force slowly ebbs out from us... We are dedicated to giving ths gift to local kids.
Our current finds will only last till we can complete the first ;level roofing, still need to finish the indoors, do the plumbing and electrical works, finish the outside of the building etc. before we can move the books there. Doing these in reduced rates with local arrangements will enable us to finish the first phase with around $4300
Please help fund this to help restore the pre-digital childhood for our kids....
