In 2014, my elder brother, Duane, got involved in a car accident when he was in an overseas assignment as part of his work. We were all thankful that he survived and that God protected him. However, he suffered a major injury. He suffered a fully fractured humerus bone (the one underneath our biceps between the shoulder and elbow), nasty enough that a metal plate has to be put.

2 years on, he fully recovered and was able to go back to his normal life. But in August 2016, infection started manifesting on the same arm. It was only thought all along that it was only a usual abcess formation or "pigsa". Despite the appropriate medication, the infection got worse that his arm continued to bleed and had to be managed on a daily basis. He sought medical attention from many doctors but his situation did not change. We saw how he suffered day in and day out. He would always almost cry everytime he gets frustrated not being able to reach that part of his arm that he needs to wound-dress. It pains to see that he needed to heavily cover his arm so he could carry her beautiful daughter, Candice. We saw how horrible his situation was, all the more that we could not do anything for him.

He finally was able to receive proper diagnosis from St. Luke's. Despite complications from his health insurance, he decided to proceed with a 2 prong procedure - the removal of his metal implant, wound debridement, culture sampling of infected soft tissue and insertion of antibiotic beads, and removal of the antibiotic vessels after 6 weeks. It was initially deemed that his metal implant was causing the infection.

While he appeared to have recovered well from the first procedure, he also received 2 devastating news. First, his health insurance declined to cover his medical expenses. He plead, crying, in front of the insurance guy as he felt he was assessed incorrectly and I know he has nowhere to rely on except his insurance as his employment benefit. I know he is still in the middle of paying off surrounding debts from her daughter's premature birth. I saw how devastated he was. I know how strong he is as a person. He made it through a lot, the lows, the rock-bottoms. I have never seen him this down.

But then the second news came right after. The culture result was released and confirmed he has Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus infection or MRSA, a possibly life-threatening bacterial infection caused by a staph strain that is resistant to most antibiotics. He is now on Vancomycin IV treatment and in isolation but it is prescribed for him to undergo this treatment in-hospital for 8 weeks.

A week in the hospital is already costing him Php 257,000 pesos before professional fees and definitely will balloon further in the coming days, and he still needs to go through the second procedure. It pains that I am not in the capacity to assist him. I love my elder brother so much. He has always been my partner in crime and had my back through thick and thin. It is so that it hurts seeing him in this predicament, down, devastated and helpless. And I know she has her daughter in mind everytime. I know he will fight through this like he always does because I know he immeasurably loves Candice that he wants to go back to his daily grind to provide a future her daughter deserves.

And I can't allow him to go down. I want to be a shinobi comrade behind the Naruto that he is in his fight (he is a fan of Naruto, read all the manga series, saw all the motion picture episodes and all the movies and even on track on the Boruto series - even at his age). Through this ask of support, I invite you to become part of his allied shinobi force in this quest.
