Joanna Watters for Lefkas cats in need

Greece generally has a significant overpopulation of cats and the beautiful island of Lefkada in the Ionian Sea is no exception. A historically inadequate approach to animal welfare and public sterilisation programs in particular has led to significant numbers of cats on the streets struggling to survive and frequently in poor health and multiplying.....

There has been an indifference and frequently reluctance in the past by Greeks who have cats around them to sterilise and even where there has been willingness locals usually have competing financial priorities given the difficult economic circumstances Greece has found herself in particularly in the last decade.

Cat Sanctuary Lefkas is an informal sanctuary located on a private property that has evolved over the last 12 years and swelled as increasing numbers of cats and kittens have come our way. We feed, we medicate, we get veterinary treatment, we sterilise both males and females and we try to find forever homes for as many kitties as we can.

Jo Watters has been a long time champion of the sanctuary in our local community supporting us with unfailing encouragement. regular donations and efforts to help us make our plight more widely known in the hope we can attract more financial support to better meet the costs of all we do and enable us to do more.

In addition, like many expats and others living here, Jo is feeding increasing numbers of street cats in her own neighbourhood. Not every cat or kitten can be taken off the street and brought to the sanctuary which is always overwhelmed.

This fundraising effort comes as we struggle through the coldest part of Greek winter and the spectre of impending spring and all the new arrivals that will bring, is Jo's initiative. We could not be more grateful for whatever support we get. Everything helps, no amount is too small and it all adds up so if you can help please know it makes a huge difference to us.
