We are taking this opportunity to raise funds in memory of Byron Higgins, who lost his battle with bowel cancer in August 2013.  The monies raised will go towards the purchase of a Hyperthermia machine.

In February 2013 Byron thought he'd pulled a muscle so we went the doctors.  within a few hours he was diagnosed and told he had only a week to live.   With a call to a friend in Canada who was dying of cancer we were told of a clinic in Germany and within the week we had arrived and care began.During Byron’s journey with his cancer battle he became aware that treatments that could greatly improve the quality of life for someone battling illness were not available through Medicare or even here in Australia. Byron and Lucia had to leave their home, family and support network and travel halfway around the globe for treatment. In Europe they have over 50 years of successes with these treatments. Byron’s dream was to be able to get the machines here to Brisbane so other families would not have to make that same difficult journey, not to mention the expense. Prior to his death Byron began working with a firm and Doctors that would be able to provide the service here in Brisbane. In time, the hope was they would then bring the research forward to Medicare as an additional treatment to radiation for cancer patients. The Serengeti Trust has been set up to fund the purchase of the Hyperthermia machines which will cost over $500,000, and to fund alternative therapy programs that will improve the quality of life for those whose battle is just beginning.

I still cry myself to sleep every night and brush away the tears with one of his favourite hankies.  A crazy red checked freebie he got from Virgin Atlantic Airways when they first started flying to South Africia. It's wearing out now and I hope the tears stop before it does.  He swore he got it from Richard Branson, and the story sounded good, and maybe this story will be too, I hope we can raise the funds before then, create hope for others, maybe save others this grief and a need for a sentimental hankie.
