Housemaid Ameena Earning $50 Struggles To Pay For Son’s Bone Marrow Transplant

Adil is not just the most energetic person in their family, but it is safe to say that he is the most restless person in their whole neighbourhood. When he started missing his routine after - the - school cricket matches,his family got suspicious. They started seeing him fall asleep right after he gets back from his school. To add to their woes, he also caught a nasty fever.

Symptoms and Diagnosis

“His fever came accompanied with an intense knee pain and it got to him so much so that it felt like his knees were going to give away anytime. So we immediately rushed him to the hospital near our house in Hyderabad. After rushing from one hospital to the other, we finally got to know that our Adil has aplastic anemia and that he needs an expensive treatment to be able to overcome it”.

“He had to drop out of school, he has stopped eating and he can’t walk. He doesn’t even recognizing me anymore...to see your own kid not know who you are, that feeling kills you”.

Aplastic anemia is a condition that happens due to bone marrow damage. Adil’s body has stopped producing new blood cells which is crucial to his survival. His mother didn’t understand any of it except the fact that he needs a costly treatment. After having spent just about everything on the weddings of her three daughters, she had nothing to spare beyond her monthly salary of Rs. 2000($35) as a househelp.

Adil’s wait for a bone marrow transplant begins

“We then shifted him to NIMS, Hyderabad. The doctors told me that he required a bone marrow transplant to survive and that it needs to be done at the earliest. It has been three years since then and he’s still waiting for that same bone marrow transplant”.

Ameena works as a househelp and hasn’t been able to admit him to the hospital for his bone marrow transplant. Her employers have been generous enough to pay for his treatments so far and she is too embarrassed to ask for more help.

“Doctors say that without a bone marrow transplant, he has only 3 months to live, out of which 20 days are already over. My son does not have much time left...”
