Help us Improve the Hematology Department of the Local Oncology Hospital:

Who are we?

We are EMSA (English Medical Students' Association) of the UMF - University of Medicine and Pharmacy Cluj-Napoca, Romania. We are the student organization that represents all the international students studying in the English section of our university. We are trying to represent and take care of the needs and wishes of our students, both inside the classroom and outside, making them feel as much as home as in their country of origin. We are also trying to give students the opportunity to get involved in extracurricular activities and to give back to the community that has welcomed us so well!

In the past we have organized a variety of different events ranging from Christmas Gift Giving event in the Pediatrics Hospital, group trips around Romania, Galas and educational conferences involving medical professionals from around the globe..

What are we trying to do?

EMSA is delighted to say, that we, along with your help, would like to take on a renovation project for the Hematology Department of the Local Oncology Hospital. As students of the University of Medicine and Pharmacy Cluj-Napoca, many of us have had classes at the hospital and we all agree that it could do with some help. The project will be split into Phase 1 and Phase 2. We aim to complete phase 1 of the project by the end of this academic year and phase 2 in the following year. Our aim is to improve conditions in the hospital for both patients and medical staff.

What is Hematology?

Hematology is the study of blood in health and disease. It includes conditions with the red & white blood cells, platelets, blood vessels, bone marrow, lymph nodes, spleen and proteins involved in bleeding and clotting (hemostasis and thrombosis).

Many of these patients have a weak immune system, which is why it is imperative that the conditions of the hospital are held to a high standard.

Phase I

For the First Phase of the project, your contribution will help buy the necessary materials and equipment. Our goal is to achieve the following:

• Install automatic water-taps, decreasing the risks of infections
• Provide wheelchairs with a portable toilet for patients
• Provide mobile carts to store medicine, ensuring the fast reach of medicine in case of emergency
• Install electric beds which can be adjusted to different positions, facilitating the work of the staff and increasing comfort for the patient

Over the two years since our organization started, we have raised and saved two-thirds of the money (4200 Euros) required to make the first part of our project possible, from organizing various events including workshops, social parties, trips, charity and community events.

We will continue to organise events in the coming months. We are in the process of planning a charity run and a big party! We look forward to your participation to raise money for this initiative.
