Campaign Story
In June, 32 from the GJ Rodney East team will be in Fiji and want to give back to the local communities in need of our help.
About the Project
The HART community Lautoka is a charitable organization housing 400 residents from disadvantaged backgrounds living in poverty conditions in Fiji. Consisting mainly of single mothers and their children, many of which live on less than $5 p/day, the community receives social assistance but has very limited resources and significant needs in many areas. Please read this blog about some of their difficult stories.
In 2016, Cyclone Winston completely demolished the make-shift kindergarten structure used for early childhood education. There are 36 students (aged 3-5 years) with around 20+ in attendance each day making use of a community hall which is not fit for purpose. Two teachers certified (USP or FNU) in Early Childhood teaching run the class. The students come from within the community housing as well as the surrounding farmland areas, travelling to school on foot or by bus.
A dedicated classroom has been partially built through previous fundraising and volunteer activities, thanks to Caitlin Gallagher and the Tafe South Brisbane, QLD. See the attached photos of the structure and this blog for details. Our goal is to raise the remaining funds to help complete the construction!
The residents of this community are sincerely in need and immensely grateful for our support. They simply do not have the resources needed to provide suitable education facilities for the children.
