Help Us Achieve our Dreams of Becoming HIV Testers/Counsellors!

Dumelang! We are two sisters living in a small village called Gopong in Botswana, a country in sub-Saharan Africa that sits directly north of South Africa. Our country of Botswana has the second highest rate of HIV in the world (first is Swaziland), and we are hoping to do something about that. This campaign is to help us fund our dreams of completing a 12-week course in HIV Testing and Counseling so that we can better serve our community in the fight for epidemic control and for "zero new infections."

We knew from the time we were teenagers that we wanted to become HIV testers/counsellors. Two close friends of ours were born HIV+ because their mothers failed to test during pregnancy. They were born HIV+, but it could have been prevented had someone encouraged their mothers to test.

Since completing BGCSE (Botswana General Certificate in Secondary Education), we started a community-based organization called "Gopong Youth Health Support Group" to reach young people with educational yet entertaining messages about HIV/AIDS prevention and treatment, drug and alcohol abuse, teenage pregnancy, etc. We have done educational campaigns in our village of Gopong and in surrounding villages, we have performed at local primary schools, and we have even created and performed songs at wellness days at our local clinic. We are eager, however, to get back to school and learn even more about HIV/AIDS prevention, treatment, and care so that we can continue to serve our community the best we can.
