Help support the vulnerable kenyan students of Milman Academy

This fundraiser is aimed at achieving three goals in the "Milman Iattract Academy" project founded and run by the local Odula family in Kaswanga, Rusinga Island.

The objectives are as follows:

- the purchase of a 10,000L container to ensure clean water for students and teachers;

- ensure breakfast for students every day;

- hire and/or promote a teacher to the role of headmaster for a clearer, more transparent and efficient management of the school.

Milman Iattract Academy is a school that was funded by Michael (who died in 2019) and Jane to provide access to primary education for children in Kaswanga, a small region of Rusinga Island. As an orphan, Michael personally experienced the sometimes prohibitive cost of public education and accessibility issues for local students. Hence the will to create a change. Built behind their family home, the school aims to financially support the primary education of students aged between 3 and 15, many of whom are orphans, come from particularly vulnerable backgrounds and/or are HIV positive. The school tries to provide them with two meals a day, breakfast and lunch, which are sometimes the only meals the children eat during the day. Victor, son of Michael and Jane, is committed to carrying on his father's project and takes care of the organization and management of the school. In recent years it has created the Workaway profile to attract volunteers from all over the world who could share their skills and increase the capacity of the school. Thanks to Victor's family and to volunteers, the school is able to finance itself, to ensure free education and meals for the 110 students it currently hosts and to pay the teachers' salaries.

We spent a few weeks on Rusinga Island and, after meeting Victor, we had the opportunity to have a very interesting conversation with him during which we were exposed to the problems and difficulties that the school is currently experiencing.

We will list the main problems below:

[ 1 ] Victor is full of questions and answers, he has been involved in the organization of the school and volunteers for years, but he works in a health facility as a researcher for HIV/AIDS prevention in Kisumu, a city which is about 3 hours away from Rusinga Island, and for this he is unable to be on the island on a daily basis. According to Victor, it would be absolutely necessary to hire a figure (headmaster/supervisor) who is at school every day and who takes care of directing it and supporting him in controlling the movement of money, in managing personnel and making sure that they work in full compliance with the rules and procedures of the Child Protection Policy that each teacher has undertaken to sign and honor at the explicit request of Victor.

Hiring or promoting a teacher as headmaster would cost the school an extra 15,000 Kenyan shillings per month ($106.99).

[ 2 ] Although it is one of the main objectives of the school, it is currently not always able to ensure breakfast for the children, as the price of food depends on the seasons and is subject to variations.

Right now the cost of breakfast is 7990 Kenyan shillings per month for 110 students ($56.99).

[ 3 ] Rusinga Island is an island on Lake Victoria. At the moment there are 4 large containers in the school where rainwater and water from the lake converge. In the dry season, when the rains decrease, the school has to bear the cost of the donkeys that carry the water to the school. Also, as of today, there is only one small container that is used to purify water by inserting chlorine dioxide so that children and teachers can drink clean water.

We personally went to Mbita, the closest town to Rusinga Island, to see the cost of a bigger container to purify the water. The cost of a container of 10,000 liters is 86,000 Kenyan shillings (612,97 dollars).

The purpose of this fundraiser is to try to help solve the major problems that we volunteers and Victor have encountered. The figure of a headmaster is essential to ensure a quality education for students. In essence the current head teacher, children, teachers and Victor struggle to run the school in the best way.

Ensuring breakfast every day is necessary for children to have the concentration and strength needed to face a school day, especially considering the tropical climate and the fact that children often have no other guaranteed meals when they return home. In our three week stay on the island, breakfast was only guaranteed 3 times. As we anticipated earlier, many children are HIV positive and take antiretroviral therapy daily, a single meal a day consisting of corn and beans is not enough for the therapies to be effective and for their body to bear the medicines.

The water of Lake Victoria is extremely polluted, such a small container is not enough for 110 children and 10 teachers. Providing a more suitable container for the number of people in the school seems fundamental to us.

We thank anyone who has the opportunity and the desire to help this project which provides education and food to hundreds of students every day. All the proceeds from this fundraiser will be completely donated to the school, if we were able to increase the school budget, we could also guarantee students a more varied diet, since, as you can read from the website, they only eat corn and beans every day.

Questa raccolta fondi è volta al raggiungimento di tre obiettivi nel progetto "Milman Iattract Academy" fondato e portato avanti dalla famiglia locale Odula a Kaswanga, Rusinga Island.

Gli obiettivi sono i seguenti:

- l'acquisto di un container di 10.000L per garantire acqua pulita a studenti e insegnanti;

- assicurare la colazione quotidianamente agli studenti;

- assumere e/o promuovere un insegnante al ruolo di headmaster perché avvenga una gestione più chiara, trasparente ed efficiente della scuola.

La Milman Iattract Academy è una scuola che è stata fondata da Michael (venuto a mancare nel 2019) e Jane per fornire accesso all'istruzione primaria ai bambini di Kaswanga, una piccola regione di Rusinga Island.

In quanto orfano, Michael sperimentò personalmente il costo a volte proibitivo dell'istruzione pubblica e i problemi di accessibilità per gli studenti locali. Di qui la volontà di creare un cambiamento.

Costruita dietro la loro casa di famiglia, la scuola è volta a sostenere finanziariamente l'istruzione primaria di studenti di età tra i 3 e i 13 anni, molti dei quali sono orfani, provengono da contesti di particolare vulnerabilità e/o sono sieropositivi. La scuola cerca di assicurare loro due pasti al giorno, colazione e pranzo, che a volte sono gli unici pasti che i bambini consumano nel corso della loro giornata.

Victor, figlio di Michael e Jane, si è impegnato a portare avanti il progetto del padre e si occupa dell'organizzazione e del management della scuola. Negli ultimi anni ha creato il profilo Workaway per attirare volontari da tutto il mondo che potessero condividere le proprie competenze e aumentare le capacità della scuola. Grazie alla famiglia Odula e ai volontari, la scuola è in grado di autofinanziarsi, di assicurare istruzione e pasti gratuiti ai 110 studenti che attualmente ospita e di pagare gli stipendi degli insegnanti.

Abbiamo passato alcune settimane a Rusinga Island e, dopo aver incontrato Victor, abbiamo avuto la possibilità di condividere con lui una conversazione molto interessante durante la quale ci sono state esposte le problematiche e le difficoltà che la scuola sta attualmente vivendo e che noi stessi abbiamo avuto modo di riscontrare personalmente.

Di seguito elencheremo le principali problematiche:

[ 1 ] Victor è pieno di domande e di risposte, da anni si occupa dell'organizzazione della scuola e dei volontari, ma lavora in una health facility come ricercatore per la prevenzione dell'HIV/AIDS a Kisumu, una città che dista circa 3 ore da Rusinga Island, e per questo non riesce ad essere quotidianamente sull'isola. Secondo Victor sarebbe assolutamente necessario assumere una figura (headmaster/supervisor) che stia ogni giorno a scuola e che si occupi di dirigerla e di affiancarlo nel controllo del movimento del denaro, nella gestione del personale e di assicurarsi che lavorino nel pieno rispetto delle regole e del Child Protection Policy che ogni insegnante si è impegnato a firmare e onorare sotto esplicita richiesta di Victor.

Assumere o promuovere un insegnante come headmaster costerebbe alla scuola 15000 scellini kenioti in più al mese (106,99 dollari).

[ 2 ] Nonostante sia tra gli obiettivi principali della scuola, attualmente non riesce sempre ad assicurare la colazione ai bambini, essendo il prezzo del cibo condizionato alle stagioni e soggetto a variazioni.

In questo momento il costo della colazione ammonta a 7990 scellini kenioti al mese per 110 studenti (56,99 dollari).

[ 3 ] Rusinga Island è un'isola sul lago Vittoria, esistono nella scuola 4 grandi container in cui converge acqua piovana e acqua proveniente dal lago. Nella stagione secca, quando le piogge diminuiscono, la scuola deve farsi carico del costo degli asini che trasportano l'acqua alla scuola. Oltre ai container che collezionano l'acqua, vi è soltanto un piccolo container che viene utilizzato per depurarla inserendo diossido di cloro in modo che bambini e insegnanti possano bere acqua pulita.

Siamo andati personalmente a Mbita, la città più vicina a Rusinga Island, per vedere il costo di un container più grande per depurare l'acqua. Il costo di un container di 10.000 litri è di 86.000 scellini kenioti (612,97 dollari).

Lo scopo di questa raccolta fondi è quello di tentare di aiutare a risolvere le maggiori problematiche che noi volontari e Victor abbiamo riscontrato.

La figura di un headmaster è fondamentale perché venga assicurata un'istruzione di qualità agli studenti. In essenza di una figura di riferimento, insegnanti e Victor faticano a gestire la scuola nel migliore dei modi.

Assicurare la colazione tutti i giorni è necessario perché i bambini abbiano la concentrazione e le forze utili per affrontare una giornata di scuola, soprattutto considerando il clima tropicale e il fatto che i bambini spesso, tornati a casa, non hanno accesso ad altri pasti. In tre settimane di nostra permanenza sull'isola, la colazione è stata garantita soltanto 3 volte. Come abbiamo anticipato precedentemente, molti bambini sono sieropositivi e prendono quotidianamente la terapia antiretrovirale, un solo pasto al giorno composto da mais e fagioli non è sufficiente perché le terapie siano efficaci e perché il loro corpo sopporti le medicine.

L'acqua del lago Vittoria è estremamente inquinata, un container così piccolo per depurare l'acqua non basta per 110 bambini e 10 docenti. Fornire un container più adeguato al numero di persone nella scuola ci sembra fondamentale.

Vorremmo raccogliere i fondi per il container durante la nostra permanenza per poter acquistare il container personalmente e darvi evidenza di aver raggiunto l'obiettivo.

Ringraziamo chiunque abbia la possibilità e la voglia di aiutare questo progetto che ogni giorno assicura educazione e cibo a centinaia di studenti.

Tutto il ricavato di questa raccolta fondi sarà completamente devoluto alla scuola, se riuscissimo ad aumentare il budget della scuola, potremmo anche garantire agli studenti una dieta più variegata, in quanto, come potrete leggere dal sito web, e come abbiamo documentato, tutti i giorni mangiano solamente mais e fagioli.
