There are times in our lives where we are thrown a curveball and what has happened to my sister in the past couple of weeks could certainly be considered a major curveball. Actually not a curveball, a major natural disaster. Her life prior to the 21st of April, 2015 will not be the same life she will live after that date.

What has happened to my sister has changed her life irrevocably and sadly it could have taken her and left her beautiful babies without their mum.

On Tuesday, 21st April, Tammy went to bed and a few hours later was in an ambulance; her life changed within a space of 20 minutes. My sister has had epilepsy for a number of years and seizures are sadly a part of her life. They have limited where and how long she can drive, as well as knock her about when she has a seizure. Not to mention the damage to her brain everytime one occurs.

But this seizure wasn't like the other ones. This seizure lasted more than 10 minutes and then instead of going into recovery mode, Tammy had a stroke. Tammy was unable to walk, talk and understand. She luckily wasn't alone at the time, but in the very short time between the presentation of the seizure, the stroke and the time it took to get her to the hospital, the damage to her brain was already done.

The doctors told us the damage was irrevesible and that no amount of medication or treatment would be unable to do the damage to her brain. It was heartbreaking to watch my sister, who is normally active (well she does have two children under two), broken to the point where she needed her bread buttered and could only move her left side.

We were informed by the doctor that Tammy had suffered a major clot in the brain, resulting in a stroke and a possible Acquired Brain Injury. This news was devasting, as Tammy is the main and sole financial contributor to her family. Her recent relationship breakdown also meant that she had to try and support two households, as well as lose her son living under the same roof as hers.

You see this family has fought long and hard for their marriage because it isn't recognised in this country, as it involves her and her partner both being women. As well as the challenges and long sought after dreams of being a mother and a wife.

Although the marriage unfortunately broke down, both women love their children and want the best for both of them. How can this happen when Tammy is the sole provider an is no longer able to provide financially for her long fought for family?

Tammy is dedicated to her position as a Disability Support worker, where she works with people that are on the Austism Spectrum and who regularly display very complex behaviours of concern. Her passion to her career is evident even now, where her only goal is to get back to work to continue supporting the vulunerable people to achieve their goals and aspirations.

You would be thinking that losing your sister and daugther would of course be heartbreaking, but there is more to this story. That night two little angels could have lost their Mum. Tammy is a new mum to Thalia and Malakai. In the space of half an hour, their mum could have been gone from their lives in an instant.

We can provide an infinite amount of love, however the financial burden grows daily. Without an income, Tammy is unable to provide for her family, and now there are growing medical costs in regards to her stroke, and the associated therapies to enable her to regain her health as well as her independence.

We are hoping there are kind and generous people that will want to contribute financially to the ever growing financial burden that includes providing treatment options for Tammy. She just wants to get better and return to work and we hope in time she will be able to provide again. But right now she can't.

Now she is reaching out to you to help her in her hour of need. To help make sure she is able to focus on her recovery and to return home safely with her beautiful family; instead of the financial burdens that is ahead of her.
