Help our Pay by Plastic Shop go Green!
Our unique and explosively successful Pay by Plastic Shop is now ready for the next level:
Becoming a Zero-Waste Pay by Plastic Shop who offer eco-friendly products from the Philippines.
To fill up The Shop with GREEN products we need your support!
We aim to fundraise 50 000 PHP by the end of April 2019!
About the project
The Pay by Plastic Shop was launched on February 18th 2019 in General Luna, Siargao. It is a non-profit project created by Nature Kids of Siargao.
The Shop accepts soft plastic (clean and dry!) and styrofoam as payment creating a new currency: the Treso! For as little as 100g of plastic, customers can shop and exchange their tresos for items available in The Shop.
This project is part of the solution to the growing plastic problem on the island. It is also a way to fight poverty by stimulating the local economy and empowering the locals while bringing environmental awareness into their homes. The plastic is now too valuable to be treated as trash.
Plastic is Money!
Plastic is Treasure!
This project creates an army of eco-warriors on the island! Since the opening of The Shop, there is a never-ending line of (mostly) local kids, small businesses and mums who together are trading their plastic for useful items in The Shop. During the first week, 127kg of plastic was traded for food, school supplies, cleaning products and toys. The Shop was emptied twice!
You can now see a bunch of Nature Kids out on the streets and beaches looking for plastic - the most popular item to swap is school supplies.
How do we transform plastic into treasure?
The plastic collected by the Pay by Plastic Shop is UPCYCLED by Siargao Recycling Art Studio, another non-profit project by Nature kids of Siargao.
The Studio transforms the plastic donations into bean bags and other products which are sold to locals and businesses on the island.
For more information or to order bean bags, visit the Siargao Recycling Art Studio Facebook page @RecyclingArtStudio, contact us at [email protected] or visit us at the Siargao Recycling Art Studio situated in General Luna.
But doesn't this encourage more plastic?
Some of you may be concerned that this project encourages plastic consumption by treating plastic as a new currency. No need to worry! To put it simply, it costs much more money to buy items in order to get 100g of plastic than to buy the item you can get with your 100g of plastic.
Our main goal is to reduce the plastic pollution on the island and that is why we are continuously working towards becoming a Zero-Waste shop who offer eco-friendly products locally sourced. We believe in slowing changing the culture of plastic consumption on the island by introducing new shopping options instead of the typical one-use sachet.
In the meantime, we want to stop as much plastic as possible ending up in the oceans or in dumpsites by turning it into treasure!
How you can help:
- Donate to the project!
- Donate items directly to The Shop!
Any donation will go directly to sourcing locally produced and eco-friendly products for The Shop and to helping us achieve our zero-waste goal.
