Help My Father Fight Liver Cancer

It was October 4, 2017 when we received the devastating diagnosis of my father’s liver biopsy. It was indeed, liver cancer, as initially suspected by his Gastroenterologist. My father,Jeorge, at the time of his cancer diagnosis, was already suffering from Chronic Kidney Disease Stage 2. He underwent multiple laboratory and imaging tests to determine the stage of his cancer. Finally, last December 15, 2017 his bone imaging revealed that the cancer has already spread to his right and left ribs. It was a real life horror for our family but my father refused to give up and wanted to prolong his life for us. Under the supervision of his cancer care team, he decided to undergo systemic targeted oral chemotherapy (Sorafenib Tosylate, 200 mg) to manage and destroy his primary tumor and bone metastasis but unfortunately the cancer has progressed through and is now at stage 4 as it has metastasized to his lungs and lymphatics. In the past 12 months, he has been in and out of the hospital due to abdominal pain and various infections.

His disease has accelerated resulting to ascites (swollen abdomen), excessive and painful dry cough, congested breathing, fatigue and pneumonia, since his immune system was already compromised due to his failing liver and kidneys. He has been under the Intensive Care Unit at University of Perpetual Help Dalta Medical Center-Las Piñas City since July 20. To support and continue his life, he will need continous daily infusion of human albumin (albumax), norepinephrine (levophed), combiflex peripheral, meropenem (meromax), dextrose, etc. This will cost around PHP 20,000 ($400) per day, on top of his daily medication for pain management and liver and kidney support medications, anti-biotics, medical supplies, hospital room charges, laboratory tests and twice a week hemodialysis and blood transfusion for his CKD.

As of today, my father is jaundiced, slightly conscious, but extremely weak. His organs have been greatly affected and he is in constant excruciating pain despite taking pain relievers every 8 hours. He has lost a lot of weight and his limbs are painfully thin but his extremities are extremely swollen because of fluid retention probably due to his liver cancer and failing kidneys. Despite all these, my kind and loving father Jeorge remains hopeful, kind and strong, always with a smile on his face in spite of the pain. He demostrated strenght, resilience and positivity to his doctors, nurses and most specially to us, his sons and daughter, his family and supportive relatives. Daily hospital expenses and medicine infusions are currently on the top shelf of his needs.

The stress both physically and emotionally, this disease is putting on his and our life is enormous. For almost 3 years we have been doing our best to fund this with the help of our family, but with the cost of the medicine, laboratory tests and multiple hospitalizations since then, it is a heavy financial burden. So,now, we are asking for help which was not an easy decision. We are appealing to your compassion, kindness, and generosity to help our Papa. All funds raised through this campaign will go towards doing whatever can be done to sustain his life.
