Hi, my name is Mokhzani Ismail, I was a Malaysian 5th Year Medical Student in University of Otago, Wellington, New Zealand in 2017 before I decided to withdraw temporarily from medical school on medical reason. I had two years left before I graduate.

P/s: I am the left one in the picture, back then when I was happy. :)

In June of 2017, I was officially diagnosed with Bipolar Affective Disorder Type 2 at University Malaya Medical Centre but the symptoms have had been going on unnoticed for some years before. It was an eye opener and a life changing experience for me. Due to the nature of the illness which is an exhausting continuous battle, I felt that I needed some time of rest from study to focus on recovery and adjusting to medication.

After few months of undergoing remission under specialist follow ups, therapy sessions and support group, I felt ready to get back to where I left. I had green light from both the professionals and School Student Affairs. My readmission was approved gladly with comprehensive strategies in managing my illness were made. Hence, I tried to renew my student visa which was unfortunately declined due to me being a risk and extra cost to NZ public health system.

This is a very disappointing rejection for me as I have been quite immersed in their culture, learned the local idiosyncrasy and slang, cheered for their national All Black Rugby team and their contingent in the recent Gold Coast Commonwealth Games. Besides, I only have two years to go.

Back then, thinking that I'll be back the next year, I left my personal effects and important documents/notes/textbooks over there. However, I need to go there again and retrieve them urgently. This means I'd have to re-apply a Visitor Visa as my file was marked as Not Acceptable Standard of Health.

This process deals a lot of added cost in which my sponsor, Public Service Dept cannot reimburse. The expenditure includes:

  • return flight trips with added luggage for effects ~ NZ$ 800-1000
  • visa application fees = NZ$ 127
  • medical and xray examination for visa = RM 544
  • proof of sufficient fund of at least NZ$ 400 per month of stay. ( Which I can afford still atm)

Therefore, I humbly appreciate it if you could help lessen my burden no matter how small your contribution are. I promise I'll make good use of this second chance and will donate all the extra fund to child and women welfare/charity body.

Thank you.

May God Bless You.
