Campaign Story
On May 4th 2018 I was diagnosed with Diabetes Type 1, just 2 months
short of my 20th birthday. Even though this particular type of diabetes
is a genetic chronic disease, in my case it was triggered by a severe
instance of clinical depression, which ruined my body's ability to keep
my blood sugar level under control.
The news devastated me and my family, not only due to the seriousness of my condition, but also
because of our government's policy towards diabetic patients. Where I am
from, the beautiful country of Belarus, only children and students fall
under the category of population that is given free insulin injector
pen and free insulin monthly.
Unfortunately for me even though I managed to receive the injector, I graduated a month and a half ago and
am no longer a student thus the life saving medication is only
availbale for purchase.I know I am not the only person in a similar
situation in my country and that most adults use a cheaper, poor quality
alternative to my insulin while injecting it with regular syringes,
which substantially hinders their quality of life.
I dream of receiving better education abroad, traveling and working in Europe; all
of these things require me to have an easy and accessible way to inject
myself daily. For this to happen my family and I need to be able to
afford the particular type of insulin needed to fill my injector pen.
However, it seems impossible as it would cost 185 euros a month, while
my mom only makes roughly 450 euros, plus we need to cover living costs
and other different kinds of medication for me. Life in Belarus is very
difficult, the cost of life is overwhelmingly high, while people
struggle to make ends meet and earn minimum wage. But the point is that
insulin is the key element to leading a fulfilling life.
As I already mentioned, 185 euros would cover 5 cartridges that will last me
for a month. Additionally, if I get more donations as expected I could
also help my mom, who raises and helps me alone with every-day
spendings, which will help relieve her tension.
As of right now I have 2 cartridges left, which, depending on how I'm feeling and how my
blood sugar levels behave, will be enough till around the end of August -
beginning of September. From then on I don't really know how things
will be and if we'll be able to afford to buy it again, hence my
wellbeing might be at risk.
Once I start feeling better in my
struggle agaisnt diabetes & depression, I plan to go back to
studying and eventually working. The support I might receive now with
the help of GoGetFunding is possibly a detrimental factor in how my
future will develop as a student, a professional, an artist and
ultimately a happy person.
