Hello world, my name is Alexander Makanya i am a Zimbabwean and this is my story.
I was born on the 10th of November 1994 to christian parents, i have a loving mother and a father who was strict but still loved me. I was the 2nd born child of 3 with my older sister and younger brother, i grew up from a poor neighborhood but back then even the poor could still afford basic necessities. My father and mother came from a poor family and they walked 20 km to school everyday so they worked hard so that we would not struggle like that,My father was a mine and my mother worked at a bank.I went to creche which i excelled and primary school were i was always number 1 or 2, this made my father he moved me to a better school were i continued to excel, 2008 i started high school and with my father always telling me that he wanted the best out of me he managed to send me to a private school and told me that he wanted me to rub shoulders with kids from rich families and see how they lived. Since we did not own a car i used to wait for cars from other children going to school and at break time i would be given food by them at times if my father did not give me pocket money.I loved my new school, i was learning with white kids, Indian and other kids from other nationalities and it was like a dream for me and they were so friendly to me life could not be better, but that same year the economy of Zimbabwe became worse than ever and am sure anyone familiar with this country or world economics knows that Zimbabwe had the highest inflation rate ever recorded that means prices of commodities would rise every hour and they were long queues and shops were empty, fees at my school began to also rise and my father started struggling to pay, my mother would sometimes pay for my fees. In 2009 my mother became sick and had to stop working, she had to have an operation on her appendix. It was a simple procedure but that would have been the case if we were able to afford the Zimbabwean economic situation had gone from bad to worse my father could not afford the surgery, meanwhile schools had just opened, i went to school but was chased away because i had not paid my fees, my mother?#39;s company gave her money to get the operation but she sacrificed it so they could pay for my school fees. Thank God that did not end up being a mistake as well wishers and co-workers donated for her successful operation. We started using US dollars and everything stabilized but mt father started struggling to pay for me, my brother , my sister and my cousin as well. I used to miss 4-5 weeks of school every term because of fees and that affected my performance in school and that is when i was introduced to depression. In my last year of high school we were asked to apply to Universities we wanted to go to, everyone me included wanted to go to either America or England, we would share stories of the big dream, maybe i was naive since i forgot the situation at home or the fact that my father was struggling to pay my fees which were 40 times less than the average tuition for these American Universities. I started applying but soon enough reality hit me when the reply came i was happy and sad at the same time. I had been accepted but i only got a grant of $9000 and had to pay $ 37500, i knew i could never show anyone so i hid the letter and started applying to cheap places. That is when i found Malaysia which was seriously cheap and i applied, i got accepted and showed my father. My family was happy because for the first time i would be the first member of the Makanyas to go to University later on abroad. I was excited but soon that excitement faded my father's mine started to run out of gold and he was struggling to pay $850 for the visa so we had to borrow. We got the money and paid on the last day which it was due, then i waited till my visa was approved which took 3 months. My visa came out in September 2014 and school was starting that same month so we had to act fast, my father was not a good planner who always waited for the last minute to start looking for money, it had its consequences has i spent 2 months at home while he looked for the money, I had missed school by close to 2 months as he was able to pay my tuition on the 20th of October. He promised to send money for my upkeep when i was there so i waited some nights i just drank tap water which was recommended here but i did not have a choice till he sent $20 . Life in Malaysia was hard for me firstly i had to adapt to the different weather conditions and the people were not as friendly as i had hoped, on my first day to school i lost my phone and had no way of talking to my family at all. I was helped by other Africans as they gave me food, money and showed me around. I continued to struggle for months my parents would send what little they had but in a country like this it was nothing with bills and rent most of that money went there and i would be left with nothing. In school i was doing my best i knew that if i worked hard i would get a scholarship at the end of the year, my classmates were not at all friendly meaning i had to sit alone with no text books and study alone since i was the only International student in the class. I did my best and when the results came they were shocked as i got 4 As, i told my father and he was happy and promised to do the best he could. My second semester i excelled again getting all As for my subjects but i owed the school money and i had bills accumulating that had not been paid for months, i was beginning to fall into depression i started to look for jobs but i heard we were not allowed to work by the immigration so started looking at the internet at jobs that promised $1500 per day for little investment, i was so happy to see this that i asked my friend to borrow me some money so i could invest but he was much experienced than me and told me me that they were scams that if i paid the $100 i would never hear from them again. I was hurt as that was the only source of income other than my dad that could help me. My third semester was very hard for me because i missed 3 weeks, i did not pay last semester fees and they did not allow me to start school, i had to write a letter and since my lecturers loved me they helped me get registered. I got 4 As and 1 B and my CG PA was 3.81 i was a bit disappointed because i wanted to get 4.00 so i could get that scholarship. A school was able to offer me a grant so my fees would be $10000 for the whole 3 years, i was happy that i had done my part but now with the economy of Zimbabwe at its all time low people were losing jobs everyday, money was scarce at home and some of our property was taken because we owed the municipality money, things were getting worse. Recently my electricity got cut off because i was not paying and my father could not even send $50 so i could pay that is how tough things are. My visa is expiring in 2 weeks and i need to pay $850 for it or else i will get deported, my rent is due on the 1st and school is supposed to start on the 2nd of November . I talked to a counselor at the new school and she said she could help me after i finish my first semester there by getting me small jobs at the school but for the fees and visa i had to pay for them she could not do anything. My goal is to get my degree in BBA Management and start an investment firm that raises money from other companies and pays for University tuition for African children because i know how it feels not being able to afford a highway to your dreams and goals i plan on becoming financially independent from my family so they can turn to my little brother who was forced to stop going to school after his O Levels and be able to send him a little so he pays the school he owes money to for them to release his certificate , so i am appealing to those that want to help me realize this goal by helping me fund for my visa and tuition. I want to thank you all those that do and those that took the time to read my story . I have a blog that i recently started you can follow me and my story there thank you
