Cause:

I am Suraj Panigrahi, a senior undergraduate in Mechanical Engineering at Indian Institute of Technology Varanasi. I have received an admit to pursue 21 months research-based Masters in Biomedical Engineering at Carnegie Mellon University. (Fall 2018). The tuition fee per year is US$46000 and I seek your help to get a partial funding for the same. The deadline for accepting the offer from the university is April 15, 2018.

My Story:

I have excelled in academics at various stages. I ranked 2571 among 1.3 million applicants in the entrance exam to IIT to pursue Mechanical Engineering. IIT (BHU) Varanasi is among the best universities of India. I belong to a lower income household of Balasore, Odisha, India. My father is a press operator at a private aluminium industry and my mother is a primary school teacher. I received the Merit-cum-Means scholarship awarded to the top 25% of the students of the university to help with my undergraduate study.

Interdisciplinary fields of engineering have always intrigued me. However, it was during my summer internship at Biomechanics and Bioengineering Lab (CNRS) in France that I experienced my Eureka moment. I realized that I can advance research in biomechanics. It was a fully funded journey by my research laboratory. I went on to publish an International conference paper and one of my research papers is in review at an international journal. You can have a glance at my profile here: https://surajpanigrahimec1.wixsite.com/surajpanigr...

I have excelled in several national level extra-curricular activities and I have been awarded IIT (BHU) Gymkhana 'Honorable Mention' for excellence in the field of 'creative design' and also Certificate of Merit for excellence in 'Robotics'. Further, I have volunteered in 'Unnat Bharat Abhiyan' testing the water quality of an adjacent village 'Tikari' and creating awareness among the people to practice clean habits. I have also started my own blog- A Numb Mind (www.anumbmind.xyz) where I write about career, internships and latest research. Some of my articles have also featured in popular science communication magazines of India like Science Reporter.

Why me?

I want to apply mechanical engineering principles to develop affordable medical devices - one of the grand challenges of India and many developing economies. Nothing would satisfy me more than to see my innovations translate from ‘bench to bedside.’ I believe that I possess the motivation, intellectual ability and preparation to make original contributions in biomechanics and use the knowledge to develop medical devices. Further, Carnegie Mellon University is one of the best universities of the world for research in biomechanics and biorobotics.

How will I spend the money?

The annual cost of attending Carnegie Mellon is USD $68000.

The tuition fee is USD $46000.

I have secured some funding from a private organization and wish to secure certain amount from bank as loan. However, the bank loan is limited due to the limited collateral. I seek fund for one semester i.e. USD $23000.

I need your help to help me attend Carnegie Mellon University.

P.S.: I am willing to refund the amount when I secure a job.
