Help Luz & David rebuild their home

Hi, we are Luz and David, the founders of Evolving Education (EE), a social innovation project to democratize the tools to transform education.

For five years, we have put everything in to support people to transform education. This time we need your help.

We took a flight in the morning of the 24th February to Mexico City to welcome David’s mother, who came to visit us for the first time from Spain. As soon as we landed, we received a call from a neighbor back in Puerto Escondido: “Your house is burning!”

I cannot describe the feeling. Shivering of impotence faced by all my self-control wanting to be helpful. I called everyone I know in town, got help, water arrived… Only the kitchen structure was left. Laptops with our new trainings and films, all our clothes, Luz’s paintings about to be displayed, our notebooks with the memories from our world research awaiting to be turned into a book… all gone.

We were so joyful in the home that we had built ourselves in the last two years: completely sustainable, regenerating the soil and starting to be able to grow food. We had just finished two new cabins so that family and friends could visit us.

Just the night before leaving, we watered each plant and secured our valuables in our little wooden cabin. We departed only with a small bag (what airlines call a “personal item”) with clothes for two days.

Like many social entrepreneurs, we put all our skin in the game to positively impact the world through education. Our skin got very vulnerable in this process, with no stable salary, health insurance, pension plan or house insurance. In fact, the only thing that we have secured is our work, with hard-disk copies in our family house and online back-ups. So, no worries EE is on.

We put all our energies in researching what works to support children to develop their passions and social responsibility, creating multimedia awareness campaigns and training programs for schools. Just last week, for instance, we were working on a project to support schools in vulnerable neighborhoods to build social cohesion.

This time, we will document the process. So many friends told us that we should share how sustainable we live. Maybe this is a second chance to connect education and sustainability.
