GREEN BEANS FARMING IN KENYA:

Hello everyone, my name is Stephen M. Njagi, a co-founder of Kenya Digital Farming. We are a group of small scale farmers faced with numerous challenges including changing weather patterns, pricey chemicals as well as relative isolation. We have been farming maize and potatoes in a two acre leased farm for the last two years and the returns have not been good. Extreme weather has been hurting our crops and most of our members are now on the verge of giving up.

The shift in weather pattern has forced us to look for maize and potato alternatives and we have now decided to shift our focus on French beans and tap into the international market. We have been on the ground for the past three months researching and consulting export agents for training, mentorship and market advice. This is a crucially important step as these are the agents that will buy directly from farmers and sell the produce to the international markets.

Why do we need your donation?

After 90 days of research and training, we are now familiar with the right kinds of species, pesticides and packaging methods and we are ready to hit the ground running. As well you all know, green beans grow in warm-wet areas where the soil must to be well drained and water supply adequate. We need your help to lease the land, fence it, prepare it, build a store and buy the crop. We will also need pipes and storage tanks for irrigation purposes. This is the kind of assistance we need at the moment to kick start our project

How will this project be impactful?

As stated, we have been leasing land for maize and potato farming in Kenya. But because of the changing weather pattern and other factors, we have decided to change venture into green beans farming. As you all know, green beans require adequate water meaning we cannot rely on rain alone as it was the case with other crops we grew. For this reason, we are humbly asking for your help so we can realize our dreams. In return, we will reach out to more young people and sponsor them to become financially independent. We are doing this with irrigation meaning we can grow the crops throughout the year. Be part of this life changing projects!

Our budget:

Land leasing -- $680 ($90 per acre)

Land preparation -- $300 ($42 per acre)

Seeds-- $220

Fencing-- $250

A water pipe--$65

Store -- $120

Water pump -- $200

Total: $1,835
