My decision to become a professional journalist feels like coming home to my true self. My interest in journalism began more than twenty years ago, with life at the then internally displaced persons’ camp in Northern Uganda. In 2014, I completed high school. But two years later I could not afford to proceed with my education as both my parents do not have any decent job that could raise money to pay fees for the four of my brothers and sisters. In 2016, I decided to get started with my dream career of journalism.

Started writing news from my community and sending it to the local radio stations.

With much eagerness to get back to school and further my studies, I enrolled for a certificate course in Journalism in 2018. This was after I started earning from my freelance writing. However, I dropped out of the institution after failing to pay for the second semester. A year later (2019) I joined another institution with the little money I had saved. But then the institution I was studying at closed its branch that was nearest to me.

I couldn’t afford to travel to another branch which is 124km away (from Lira to Soroti) in Eastern Uganda. My struggle to earn me proper education ended there.

I currently work with Daily Monitor Newspaper as a freelance writer in Northern Uganda. Now my aspiration is to become a professional journalist.

Getting back to school will allow me to make a big difference in the communities—especially those whose voices cannot be heard, or are afraid to speak out about what matters in their daily life.

After I become a professional journalist, my vision is to open a media company that will embrace investigative reporting and solution journalism to create well-informed and empowered society.

While I am in journalism school, I will not be able to earn as much money. I currently work more than full-time as a freelance writer, but that will no longer be possible. In addition to tuition, this fundraising will help my family with our monthly living expenses.

Thank you for supporting my dream by contributing to my education fund. Your support will directly translate into creating an informed and empowered community.
