"In 1989, the Romanian people tore their country free from 40 years of communist dictatorship. The scenes of deprivation and neglect, which met with a blaze of media coverage, bore testament to the deprivations that a brutal regime had inflicted on a beautiful country and a proud nation. Recovery from this is a slow process and 44% of Romania’s 22 million people still live in poverty – a statistic we are more used to seeing in the third world than for one of our European neighbours.

People suffering life-threatening or terminal illnesses such as advanced cancer or AIDS are particularly vulnerable to poorly funded services and anyone diagnosed with a terminal illness, is likely to be sent home from hospital to die without any support or adequate pain relief. So, in 1992, Hospices of Hope introduced hospice and palliative care services into the region for the first time. Through setting up the organisation in Romania, we have improved the quality of life for over 12,000 such patients, but we need your help to continue this work."

About volunteering

I worked as a volunteer for Hospice for a few times, raising fund with different ocassions. Usually vounteer fund raising comes from auctioning dontated objects (e.g. the Olympic torch) or from charity raffles. Other funds come from UK partners and from private donors and sponsorships. Being a volunteer I met people that once donated, and later the circumstances made that they needed Hospice's services, for receiving cancer treatment they didn't afford. They were alive only thanks to Hospice. 

What we need

Hospice of Hope currently has only one center in Romania, and is struggling to extend in other cities too. Currently they are tring to open a new center in Bucharest, because funds are scarce and the government offers no help. Help them open the new center, or why not other centers all aroud the country, enableing them to ameliorate people's pain and make their last moments of their lives as good as possible. 

PS: I am raising the funds here, and after a considerable amount is received I will send them the money. After sending the money I can send anyone proof, so they are sure that money are in good hands.
