Undergoing spine surgery is a life-altering experience that often comes with a mix of anxiety, uncertainty, and hope.

My journey began when I started experiencing persistent back pain after I lifted a table and worsened when I fell from a chair at my workplace while doing school tasks. After consulting with several healthcare professionals, I received the daunting diagnosis: I had a serious spinal condition called chronic low back pain with radiculopathy and sciatica bilateral 2 to spinal stenosis 3 to desiccated disc disease/herniated nucleus polpusos L4-L5 L5-S1 extruded that required surgical intervention. The news was overwhelming, but it was also a glimmer of hope. The surgery was seen as the key to relieving my pain.

The days leading up to the surgery were filled with a flurry of emotions. Fear of the surgery, concern about the risks involved, worried about financial constraints and the anticipation of the procedure itself weighed heavily on my mind. I met with my surgeon, who explained the intricacies of the surgery and addressed my concerns. The pre-operative period involved a series of medical tests and discussions, all aimed at ensuring I was mentally and physically prepared for the upcoming procedure.

The day before the surgery arrived, and I was admitted to the hospital. I changed into a hospital gown, met with the anesthesia team, and had final discussions with my surgeon. As I was wheeled into the operating room, I couldn't help but feel a mixture of fear and hope. I knew that this surgery was my best chance at a pain-free life, and I placed my trust in the skilled hands of the medical team.

The surgery itself was a complex procedure that lasted eight hours. During this time, the surgeon carefully accessed my spine, corrected the structural issues causing my pain, and ensured the stability of the affected area. While I was under anesthesia and unaware of the intricacies of the operation, the medical team was hard at work, meticulously carrying out their tasks.

Waking up in the recovery room was a surreal experience. The immediate post-operative period was marked by discomfort, pain, and limited mobility. I was closely monitored by the nursing staff, and my doctors became a critical aspect of my recovery. The support of my fiancé, family and friends played a pivotal role during this challenging phase.

My journey through recovery still has a long way. Initially, I grappled with the physical toll it took on my body, but little did I know that it would soon have a serious impact on my financial well-being. The mounting medical bills and prescription costs began to add up, casting a long and threatening shadow over my finances. The constant fear of being overwhelmed by medical debt loomed large, adding yet another layer of stress to my already fragile health. The financial challenges brought about by my illness took a considerable emotional burden on me. Feelings of helplessness, frustration, and guilt became constant companions. I often found myself questioning whether I was a burden to my loved ones due to the financial challenge we are experiencing.
