We have 200 orphans between 1 and 17 years old. These children remained orphans because their parents died of AIDS. There are over 1 million orphans in Zambia, mostly because of this terrible disease.
These children are fed, dressed and sent to school with our help. We have a 40-hectare property that I received for free from the village boss. On this property we planted an orchard of 400 fruit trees, a vegetable garden, an oatmeal to nourish children. We also have animals: laying hens, dairy cows, goats and 4 donkeys. All this ensures the food of the children and those who work with us on the earth.
This orphanage is not an orphanage in the original sense of the word. I do not believe in the institution of the traditional orphanage that closes orphans in a building and separates them from their culture and society. All experiences of orphans around the world who grew up in orphanages are negative.
What we do is leave the orphans in their villages, growing up in their society. We arrange with families in the village, often aunts or grandparents, to grow them, and we help them with food, clothing and education. In this way, the orphans are not traumatized, but grow in the same language and culture, and no one marginalizes them.
The project started in 2010. For the near future, we want to start building a few buildings to give orphans over 18 years an opportunity to be trained in various fields: installation of solar water systems, mechanics, tailors, in agriculture, etc. In this way they will be able to form families and become leaders of their society.
Here's some information on how much it costs to continue the project:
Orphan's food per month is 30 Euros
An orphan's school per year costs 150 Euros
Medical care and clothes costs 40 euros per month
A goat costs 50 Euros
A dairy cow costs 300 Euros
A hen costs 10 Euros
The salary of a local working on the property is 200 Euro per month (we have 8 workers)
Keeping the property costs 400 euros per month.
I alone do not have the money to finish such a project. Small or large amounts are welcome as you think you can each. I am available and I want to finish this project.
