Aileen, 39, has been diagnosed with cardiomyopathy since 2010 alongside other illness. Over the years, her heart’s ability to function properly has deteriorated.
A recent collapse has triggered an urgent need for a device called ICD - Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator. This would allow her to heart to get an instant jumpstart should it have a problem again.
Aileen is a single mom to a 11 year old daughter. Her prayer is to live to see her child reach 18. And though will power is strong, resources are low. We are knocking on kind hearts out there, to help us raise enough funds to purchase the device, pay for the procedure of putting it in, and aftercare. Any minute we wait longer without this life-saving device and procedure poses a danger to Aileen's life. Hope you can help now.
Currently Aileen has been discharged and at home waiting for a device to be available at Philippine General Hospital (PGH).
In as much as we want to buy the device to fast track her operation, due to the limited supply and high demand of the the device, we would have to wait until PGH gives us a slot. At the moment a lot of people are in queu for this and cases with Fatal Arythmia ( a flat line) is being prioritized. As of today, we are still awaiting her 2D echo results to know if she qualifies as a priority patient.
Meanwhile, through help of a friend, we were able to find a doctor in UST (a private hospital) who could help Aileen get a chance for a free device.
The hospital’s committee in charge of this kind of procedure will deliberate anytime now if Aileen will get a free device (charity) and what kind of ICD will be implanted to her. UST has given her a tentative slot for the procedure this coming June 5 or 6 2018.
Should she qualify to get a free ICD, this will be a great help however the hospital fees for the procedure will be higher at UST. Although this will cost more, It is also our best chance for her to have the procedure done as soon as possible.
Your continued sharing of the link will help get more donations coming. Depends on what kind of ICD she needs, the price of the ICD alone can start from 280k to 500k. More expensive private hospitals charge 750k for this according to one of the doctor that was consulted by one of our batchmate.
We hope you could join us in prayer that UST grants her this free device so she gets the procedure done in a few weeks.
Should this be the case, donations will fund the procedure and the post procedure care and medication.
What wonderful outpouring of love, support and prayers! All your messages and donations are getting routed directly to Aileen, who is gratefully receiving these blessings. Thank you for your kindness and involvement in fundraising!
Aileen is currently taking a series of tests to ascertain her full health condition, what kind of ICD device needed and when the operation can be done. Many might be not be aware of ICD / procedure, so we prepared an FAQ for those who would like a primer (cheers Dr Mic!):
What’s an ICD?
An Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator (ICD) is a battery-powered device placed under the skin that keeps track of your heart rate. If an abnormal rhythm is detected, the device will deliver an electric shock to restore a normal heart beat. ICDs have been very useful in preventing sudden death in patients with irregular heart beat.
How different is it with a pacemaker?
An ICD is both a pacemaker and a defibrillator. A pacemaker can send low impulses to restore normal rhythm. An ICD can send these low impulses too but if needed be like in sudden cardiac arrest, can send high impulses, which can restart the heart again. So it’s a step up from the pacemaker.
How much does it cost?
The device itself costs 280-500k (depending on the number of chambers needed).
Why does Aileen need an ICD?
Aileen is a diagnosed case of Dilated Cardiomyopathy (DCMP) which predisposes her to have irregular heart beat. The lower the ejection fraction (EF ), the more dangerous it is. The normal EF is above 55%. Aileen already went as low as 14%. Just recently she had a life threatening heart irregularity and was advised by her cardio to have an ICD as soon as possible.
