GVN – Laura Goes to Ghana

My name is Laura Bauch and I will be volunteering in Ghana this October through Global Volunteer Network. GVN is a non-Government organization which places people in a range of opportunities such as teaching or environmental work in a number of countries. I will be working with a local organization in Ghana, called Help A School, for 3 weeks starting October 1^st. My major role will be aiding the running of a nearby orphanage.

The goal of volunteering in Ghana is to offer underprivileged children a future. We hope to provide children with the basic necessities of life – love, food, clothing and shelter – and also provide them with a very important education, so they can advance towards the same opportunities as their peers around the world.

During my placement I will be caring for orphans; helping to cook for, clean, prepare for school, and help with their studies. My role is that of an older sibling. A relationship that is often taken for granted, but these children are without.

In order to complete this assignment I will be using personal savings and I have been working hard to raise the funds needed to take up this opportunity to help others. If you are able to help support me financially in some way it would be greatly appreciated. My program fee to volunteer in the Ghana Children’s Program for 3 weeks is $1797 US dollars. In addition to this, I need to pay for my airfares, entry visa, vaccinations, and insurance. As you can see, volunteering does come as a cost. I would appreciate any donations you can give to enable me to take on the challenge of helping others in less fortunate circumstances than ourselves.

Any money I raise beyond my costs, I will donate to the orphanage itself to buy food and clothing for the orphans and to help provide school supplies.
