My name is Emilia Haupindi, I am a 24 years of age female from Namibia a developing country located in Southern Africa. I have recently just completed my Honors degree at the Namibia university of science and technology; my major is from the department of Natural resources management/ Nature conservation. I am very passionate about Nature and conserving our natural resources, my country Namibia is quite rich and diverse in terms of our natural resources, but often these resources are being misused and will reach to a complete depletion if not enough effort is invested in protecting the resources we have left. During my undergraduate studies my interest has always been on vegetation related studies.

My thesis was comparing woody and grass composition on two contrasting land use sites, this research was carried out on two study sites found in the northeastern part of Namibia, this is the region that receives the most amount of rainfall, but also records the highest number of wildfires. Over the years an increase of illegal timber harvesting, farming activities are resulting in the loss of valuable plant species and are causing the land to deteriorate. The results of my thesis proved that over a long-term gradient we have lost quite several species and will continue to do so if no intervention or review of the management plans on the studies sites are done.

My long-term goal is to become a researcher, and work towards a lifelong aim of ensuring that our species are protected and sustainably used for us and the future generation. We have already contributed and altered the adaptions of the species in our environments; however, we still aim to find the best suited solutions to ensure we co-exist with these precious wildlife. I believe that knowledge is power, thus I have applied for a master’s Wildlife management conservation control programme in Sassari a university in Italy, having read the overall objectives of this course I believe that at the end of my studies I will have acquired sufficient and more diverse skills and knowledge that will continue to help me carry on my career goal as a conservationist. I am however worried that this opportunity will pass me by as I do not have the financial support required to complete the 2 years duration master’s programme.

I am the first born of a single parent mother, completing my studies was and is still a huge challenge for my mother. My mother is unemployed and the little amount of money she can raise is not able to sustain or put my younger brother and I through school. For my primary and secondary School studies I was able to secure scholarships which helped lift the financial burden from her. When I got to tertiary level, I was able to get assistance from the Namibia student financial fund, however the institution will not fund my further studies as they no longer have enough funds to do so. The institution is prioritizing, undergrades so they can obtain their first degrees. In Namibia I have little to no opportunities that can assist me in raising the money required for me to complete my 2 years duration master’s programme in Italy. This opportunity comes with a financial burden on my mother and is unfortunately unable to assist me with the funds I will need to enroll for this programme, I thus am appealing to the audience at large to help decrease the financial burden from my mother. To any potential donors, I will be very grateful for any assistance you are able to render me so I can continue my fight for a safe environmental space for our wildlife.

Thank you for taking your time to read my story, I am patiently waiting for your responses and dearly appreciate any sort of assistance. Should you need more information or details, below I have written down my email address.

  • Emily is a highly motivated, ambitious and honest person. In our class she stood out as class representative and as a student at a high academic level. To get a position as a scientific researcher, academic experiences at an out-of-state university are very often a prerequisite and without them, graduates in Namibia are often denied entry-level positions. Let's support Emily! All the best & good luck!
