Helping You Community Forum (HYCF) is a local non-profit organization based in Karonga, Malawi in Sub-Saharan Africa. HYCF is committed to supporting underserved rural communities and children by providing the necessary resources to meet their most basic needs, including proper healthcare, food, education, and most significantly, human rights and dignity.

In the village of Mwenilondo, just 5 miles south of the city of Karonga along the northwest shorts of Lake Malawi, up to 90% of its 7,243 residents lives in extreme poverty. After working with the village chiefs and residents, HYCF developed a solution to live the community out of poverty and provide a sustainable source of income for villagers. With enough funding, HYCF’s Chicken Poultry Project will support 500 men and 500 women in the community with 1,500 chickens. The villagers in turn will provide the bricks, sand, and water to construct the infrastructure necessary for the health and reproductivity of the chickens.

Funding is needed to ensure the sustainability of Chicken Poultry Project, which is broken down into 3 critical phases:

  • Initial construction: buy cement, iron sheets, acquire Barger bars, and roofing materials; contract a brick layer; cover transportation expenses as well as water and electricity supply.
  • Poultry and care: purchase 1,500 chicks, incubators, water troughs, feeding trays, layers mash and broiler starter mash, and vitamins; also cover transportation expenses and utility costs.
  • Sustainable care: continuous care (purchase mash, vitamins, etc.) of the chicks; pay for transportation expenses and utility bills to ensure the ongoing health and reproduction of chicks.

The total cost of this project is US$13,000. Through this campaign, we hope to raise US$15,000 to cover processing fees and a little extra as an emergency fund for the villagers of Mwenilondo.

Once the project is established, the chickens will reproduce and their eggs and new chicks can be sold for profit. These profits will be re-invested in the community by contributing to expanding the project to include more rural families, thereby creating long-term financial independency and self-resiliency for the local community.

Since the region’s main economic and food sources include rice and maize, the addition of poultry and eggs would provide the people of Mwenilondo with improved nutrition, greater food security, and more diversified income. In the long-term, the success of this project will lead to improved livelihoods, greater economic opportunities, and new agricultural value chains for rural families.
