Hi, everyone!

My mother, Prima, better known as Ama, has been recently diagnosed with gastric cancer (stomach cancer). Her diagnosis came as a surprise as her symptoms didn’t warrant a suspicion. We thought these were only side effects from her medication or worse, GERD.

Earlier this March 2022, we consulted a doctor due to her frequent urination. A kidney stone and myoma were found in her ultrasound. She was given medication for her kidney stone and was referred to an OB/GYN for her myoma.

Her OB/GYN conducted a pap smear and found abnormal cells in her cervix. It was recommended she get surgery to remove her cervix as well as her myoma. On June 2022, she had undergone a TAH BSO procedure. And thankfully, her biopsy returned with just an infection.

A few days after her surgery, she experienced tightness in her chest, excessive belching, and insomnia. Went back to her doctor for consultation, and was given medication but she didn’t feel any better. We consulted a gastroenterologist, pulmonologist, and psychiatrist but no luck.

We felt frustrated at this time. We decided to go for another consultation with a different pulmonologist as she had been coughing for a while. Her lab results came back normal but with mild cardiomegaly which, as her doctor said, is normal for people her age.

After all the interventions made by the pulmonologist, her symptoms weren’t going away so we were referred to a gastro. She was having GERD-like symptoms but just to be sure, she was given the choice of taking an endoscopy test.

She was supposed to take the test weeks later but was moved earlier than expected as she felt tightness in her chest one night. We immediately went to the hospital for admission. Days later, she took the endoscopy test.

After her endoscopy, it was concluded that she has erythematous gastropathy and that a small gastric polyp was seen and removed from her stomach. This happened last September 2022.

She was given medication for this, and after what felt like forever, there was progress. We were happy. After months of numerous consultations, we finally saw the light at the end of the tunnel!

But that moment didn’t last. Early this November, almost 2 months after her endoscopy, we were informed that the biopsy of the gastric polyp turned out to be grade 1 adenocarcinoma. It was cancer.

She got a CT scan and different lab tests to check if her cancer had already spread. And the results showed it did. The good news is she still has a chance if treated promptly.

We were referred to a cancer surgeon to discuss a possible approach to my mother’s case. The best way to stop the spread of her cancer is to undergo gastrectomy, a surgery to remove a part or all of her stomach. And then chemotherapy later on. As this is a race against time, we opted to get her surgery scheduled this Nov 24.

By now, we’ve exhausted most of our funds to pay for her previous surgery, hospital admissions, tests, and medications. We’ve also reached out to family, relatives, friends, and agencies for help (and we’re ever so grateful for the encouraging words and financial support they’ve given us. Means the world to us). That said, we’re still short of funds.

My family and I would like to ask for help from the goodness of your hearts, may it be financial or in prayers, for her successful surgery and recovery.
