An appeal for support

Ely Cadang has always been many things for many people.

He is a steadfast green warrior. For decades, he has worked as a public servant at the Department of Environment and Natural Resources. He knows that protecting the environment cannot be done from behind an office desk, so he climbs mountains, identifies environmental problems, and works to solve these problems through his official duties. He is a man of integrity who has served and worked with no selfish motives and ambitions.

If he has any personal motives, these would be his advocacy as a mountaineer and his actions as an artist. The songs he has composed and those he sings have always been about protecting our mountains, caves, and rivers. This fortunate combination of work and personal advocacy is what drives Ely to often work beyond his office hours and transcend the limitations of the resources of his office.

His participation in the movement for change is unquestionable. He has never wavered in his advocacy and principles: TO SERVE THE PEOPLE. He has become a go-to guy for many organizations. He volunteers to sing in events, participate and provide insight in committees, and help people through his networks.

Ely is just as passionate with his family and friends. His house has become the house of many souls, a sanctuary for those in need of rest, food, advice, affirmation and support. While he is a man of modest means, he makes sure that the kindness and generosity of his family is always available to anyone in need. For all these, we are truly indebted to Ely with the support of his wife, Celia.

For his overflowing number of friends, Ely is our manong, kumpare, padli, ka-jamming, and even our lakay for all seasons.

Ely had to put all his activities on hold recently when he had surgery to remove a mass in his rectal area. Sadly, he was diagnosed with Stage 2 rectal cancer. Ely is the bread winner of the family and has become unemployed since his operation in September, yet Ely has to undergo 6 chemotherapy sessions which are necessary in order to prevent the mass from recurring. Each session costs 50-70 thousand pesos, not counting the added cost of required medication.

Ely needs us now. Now is the time to return the love that Ely has shown us. We are appealing to your kindness and generosity. Let's support him in his fight for his life. Your help will pave the way for his full recovery, and eventually, his resumption of his role as our brother, friend, advocate and hero.
