Why am I spending my birthday in Lebanon?

This year I will be spending my birthday in Lebanon running a series of cooking workshops for Syrian refugees. I figured I'm pretty lucky and just wanted to make some people who aren't that lucky smile with some good food. Please help me make it as wonderful as I possibly can for them!

Where and what exactly will I be doing?

In the North of Lebanon there is a very poor region which has found itself having to deal with a huge influx of Syrian refugees. In turn the refugees are trying to create a new life while trying to understand why they were dealt such a bad hand.

'Strangers' entering a new community would create tensions anywhere and here is no different. Whilst the Lebanese communities have been supportive of the influx it is nonetheless causing some strains. The organisation Relief and Reconciliation, with whom I will be working, aims at coordinating projects that highlight the similarities and bring people, from whatever religious or cultural standing, together.

I will be running a series of cooking workshops to varying age groups and factions in the region. They won't be complicated but will be a way to allow everyone to focus on a common goal- creating beautiful food to eat together. It will serve as some time away from the struggles of life, a time for storytelling and a time for joy. I will need your help to raise capital for basic cooking equipment and produce so that together we can make this an experience that will serve them for their future- both as a skill and as a memory of people working together!
