Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) has serious implications on the sexual and reproductive health of girls and women in rural communities in Kenya.Immediate complications include:Severe pain, shock, hemorrhage, tetanus or infection, urine retention, ulceration of the genital region, urinary tract infection and injury to vaginal tissues. Long-term effects include complications during child birth, formation of cysts and abscesses, urinary incontinence due to damage of the urethra, fistula in some cases, sexual dysfunction, increased risks of HIV infection, psychological problems among others. Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) still remains a major form of gender based violence and human rights violation against young women and adolescent girls in rural Kenya despite the fact that the Kenyan government has put in place laws to combat the cultural practice.
The cultural practice is still deeply embraced by many rural communities and Brexta Media in partnership with Score Community Solutions (a community based organization) are working in these communities by undertaking various advocacy activities and victim rescue programs to end the practice and empower the young women and adolescent girls from these communities socio-economically. The two partner organizations are looking for funds to build a rescue center for the the FGM victims, and provide shelter to girls running away from their homes to avoid undergoing the procedure. The center shall be equipped with accommodation facilities, sexual and reproductive health Education, Information and Communication materials as well as a fully equipped medical/health facility with doctors, clinical psychologists and nurses to support the victims of FGM who develop complications after being forced to undergo FGM. The money raised will also be used to conduct outreach campaigns against the FGM in the communities. Your support will greatly change the lives of young women and girls in this part of Sub-saharan Africa.
