Let's help Emy reach the goal of becoming a nurse by helping provide the education she is passionate about.

Who is Emy?

Emy was my 24/7 home carer after my recent surgery when I could not walk or care for myself. She was understanding, kind, ever so capable, and skilled. I felt cosseted and in good hands the whole time she was with me. She is confident, nurturing, and very competent. Emy Wirawati is keen to become a fully qualified nurse and she would be one of the best.

This does not surprise me, as I’ve watched Emy grow and blossom since she was a child. There is no question that I am biased about her, However, at 18, she is an impressive young woman in every way - confident, nurturing, and very competent.

Many of you will have had the delightful experience of being driven around Bali by Wayan Beneh while he discusses the culture, nature, religion, and people of The Island of the Gods. Emy is Wayan’s daughter.

A Covid Hardship

The Covid epidemic has hit the tourism dependent Balinese hard and Emy’s family have been suffering. Prior to Covid, Wayan and his wife, Putu had planned to, as necessary, borrow to pay for Emy to fulfill her dream of becoming a nurse. However, since the pandemic Emy’s parents have been struggling, with virtually no income for two and a half years. At times it has been a strain to put nutritious food on the table and they have had to borrow just to get by. As a result, their long held hopes of helping Emy go to university have faded and she does not, in any case, want to add to their burden.

Emy’s Accomplishments

Emy has recently finished her nurse assistant training with a ranking of number 2 in her class with a designation of “best value”, a special recognition for her efforts.

Because of her high ranking she is part of the university “invitation scheme” - “High school students with high and consistent grades are invited to enroll to state universities without tests through SNMPTN.” The 5-year programme results in a Bachelor of Nursing degree from Stikes Bina Usada Bali.

During Emy’s hospital work experience Emy saw many elderly patients without family to care for them. She wants to help. Emy knows that through her education and her profession she can contribute in meaningful way to others in need and to society. She has proven that she is willing to study and to excel. She is dedicated to helping others and loves nothing more than being of service.

Why Emy Needs Your Help

Emy passionately wants to go forward to university to get her nursing degree but she understands that her family cannot afford it and I don’t have the money to send her. The cost for Emy to attend nursing school and graduate with a 5-year degree is Rp100,000,000. That is about Au$9,900 or US$6,800 for her 5-year degree. Wayan’s family are willing to sacrifice to make this happen. Emy wants to work while studying for her nursing degree.

Why Women’s Education is Important

The WorldBank says this about the education of women:
“Both individuals and countries benefit from girls’ education. Better educated women tend to be more informed about nutrition and healthcare, have fewer children, marry at a later age, and their children are usually healthier, should they choose to become mothers. They are more likely to participate in the formal labor market and earn higher incomes. A recent World Bank study estimates that the “limited educational opportunities for girls, and barriers to completing 12 years of education, cost countries between US$15 trillion and $30 trillion in lost lifetime productivity and earnings.” All these factors combined can help lift households, communities, and countries out of poverty.”

Let’s Do This!

With high hopes and more than a smidgen of faith, I’m asking you to give Emy the well-deserved chance to go to University. In this way you can help her build a better future for herself, her family and the Island of Bali. She will be ever so grateful and will remember your generosity. Her education will benefit not only Emy, many others in Bali. 100% of funds raised will go directly to Emy's college, Stikes Bina Usada Bali.
