Educational Project for Civil Engineering students – Understanding the Greatest Structures of Rome

The Faculty of Civil Engineering and Building Services of Iasi is a higher education institution with a long tradition and a high academic level, located among the best profile faculties in Romania. The objective of the Faculty is to effectively perform the academic and scientific research function in the engineering field, both in national and international context, thus contributing to the intellectual, professional and social development of the individual. Starting from this mission, it becomes obvious that the whole activity is performance oriented to increase the competitiveness of the institution, both nationally and internationally.

The proposed project is an initiative of the holder of the discipline of Construction. Way of thinking, the head of works eng. George TARANU and represents the result of the personal experience accumulated throughout the university career and the desire to train new generations of better performing engineers.
As in any learning activity, the role of experimentation is essential in fixing the scientific knowledge to the students. It is not possible to speak of educational performance without a learning process as complex as covering all levels of professional or social requirements. As medical students practice in laboratories on the human body or those in mechanics on different machines and future civil engineers need to know the construction techniques used in the history of mankind from the oldest to the most modern.
The Greatest Structures made in the various stages of the evolution of the building systems are a very useful tool in analyzing and understanding the techniques and materials used.

Famous constructions developed during the Roman period such as the Pantheon, the Colosseum, the Dome in Florence, the cathedrals and aqueducts are an important study tool and the examples used as working techniques and structural solutions play an important role in developing the engineering knowledge of future graduates.
On the other hand, the importance of preserving historical monuments and consolidation techniques is an aspect that must be emphasized.
A study visit with a minimum of resources to these objectives, accompanied by specialized explanations with applied observations and discussions, will have a particularly important impact on the development of students' technical skills and knowledge but also a marked effect on the entire life of the students involved. in this project.
Students can observe besides the historical monuments as main objectives and other constructive systems such as the buildings of the airports or the infrastructure of transport type of highway or railroad existing in Italy.
