Campaign Story
The MaMito project
Global Vision
Achievers
was initially formed as Kibera Vision Achievers Group on
April 6th 2012, and later registered on December 19
th 2013. It
rebranded to Global Vision Achievers (GVA) in March 2020. It started as a films
and theatre group consisting of youths who used theatre presentations as a way
of enhancing peace and unity in the slum community. This continued for some
time until early 2015 when the members decided to change course, to reach more
lives in a bigger scope. GVA got interested in working with the less fortunate
in the society, more so the orphaned children in the slum communities of
Kibera, Mathare, Huruma
and other
big slums in Kenya.
The MAMITO acronym is in Swahili, Mama Mimi na Mtoto, meaning me and my child. This Project is meant to support Young Mothers. In Kibera young girls of the ages 13-20 years get children but this issue is not always addressed. A large number of girls from the Kibera slums are dropping out of schools as a result of this. Global Vision Achievers(GVA) an NGO based in Kibera decided to launch a project to address this issue by building a center for girls in the slum with the aim to provide high school Education for duration of maximum 3 years enable them complete their Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) and short entrepreneurship technical courses to aid the young mothers in starting their own business as well. Global Vision Achievers has already put 50 mothers through the program and they are doing well with most opening small businesses to support themselves.
GVA in collaboration with Green Cards Mtaani will also provide day care for all the babies while their mothers are in school.
The GVA team is doing this program on a non-profit basis. The idea is formulated to help the girls get back on their feet and enable them be independent and able to take care of their babies. Having an education certificate and key skills is key for their livelihood.
Having a life changing sponsorship program that will crop up within the same is an added advantage.
Objectives
- Completion of the Kenya Curriculum subjects and the KCSE exams in various schools in the local community
- Entrepreneurship and Technical course training
- Day care facilities for all babies for the young mothers
How the young mothers benefit from the program
- Build their confidence
- Give them skills and help them nurture their talents
- Boost their morale in working hard
- Good bonding session with their peers and with the volunteer students.
