My name is Marie Marcellus and I am the event coordinator for the Baptist Church of Peniel, located at 1803 Nostrand Avenue in Brooklyn New York. Our church has been around for over 30 years and is a house of worship and refuge for over 200 members of our community. Our mission is deeply rooted in the restoration and perseveration of our community and communities around the world. We are by far not the biggest or richest church in our community. However, we do fill a need for support and education to all that seek it. It is in this effort we founded the Institution Mixte Du Bon Berger De Lamothe. This is a school for children starting from kindergarten to junior high school in Timarche de Telier, Lamothe Haiti.
This school plays a vital role in the community because it provides these underprivileged children an opportunity to obtain a well-rounded education. The school at the moment consists of 150 students with seven teachers. The curriculum consists of math, reading, science and social studies.
The teachers are paid an average of $65 per month. The school, although lacking in funds, does its best to provide breakfast and lunch to its students. The average family cannot afford to provide amble sustenance for their kids and rely on the school to help fill such a need. The infrastructure that houses these students is in severe need of renovation. There are not enough books or supplies for all of the students. Due to the high poverty rate, most parents cannot afford to send the kids to school with the basic supplies needed. The students do not have proper furniture in which to facilitate a productive learning environment. The floor and walls are crumbling. The benches are hard and filled with splinters. The long benches which are utilized for all the students lack storage space to hold their supplies.
To assist in raising funds to support this endeavor, our ministry as a whole has held fashion shows, asking for community support as well as purchasing items from various discount stores and websites. We are graciously asking you, the public, to assist us with donating funds to remodel and furnish the school. We are also asking for funds to help supply the students with the essentials such as books, pens, papers and backpacks. It is very important that we continue to feed these children since many families cannot afford to feed them. We are also asking for funds to acquire additional teachers to reduce the teacher to student ratio. We desperately welcome any type of donation or assistance that you might be able to provide us. I would like to thank you for your consideration in advance.
