Anya Maria Ungureanu (one year and 11 months old) has more surgeries than years, but she smiles as beautiful as any child. We have hardened ourselves in this fight for her life and they feed on beautiful moments spent with her. For example, on Christmas Holiday Anya started walking, despite the heart diseases she has before to be born. Sadly, the situation is likely to get worse.

She wasn’t born when she was diagnosed with a serious heart malformation - pulmonary valve atresia – the valve which takes blood from the heart to the lungs hasn’t been developed normally and opened. Besides, the right ventricle has been hypertrophied (the wall of the right ventricle has been thickened). Since then, she has gone through five different surgeries and recently her parents have found a solution at the best clinic in the world for congenital cardiology, Boston Children Hospital (USA). There would be possible a correction of the right ventricle, which would put an end to the biggest problem. And this intervention should be done as soon as possible, otherwise Anya’s health condition would get worse and little girl would suffer from a heart failure.

A life spent in surgeries

By the doctors’ recommendation, little girl was born in Germany so she could have the surgery as soon as possible. When she was one week old, in June 2017, Anya underwent a first intervention in which a balloon has been introduced in the pulmonary artery to widen the valve area. Before she turned one month old, she underwent the first open heart surgery, in which the blood flow was directed to the lungs. At that moment the problems didn’t end, but they multiplied. The little girl had suffered from a serious gastrointestinal disorder and the doctors decided to transfer her to another clinic in Germany, where two other surgeries gave her normal functions back.

In March 2018, Anya came back to Germany, for the next heart surgery: double-stranded lung cava anastomosis - Glenn, which connects the upper cava vein to the right pulmonary artery. This was a temporary treatment, to improve the flow of blood to the lungs.

The parents' hearts cannot wait

The doctors from Germany haven’t told the parents exactly the next steps to follow, because they wait to see the evolution of her heart in time. So we’ve written to the best clinic in the world for congenital cardiology, Boston Children Hospital (USA). Their reply was that they can completely correct the right ventricle, a surgical option for congenital heart abnormalities characterized by right ventricular hypoplasia and / or dysplasia. Which, for Anya, would mean the end of the biggest problem! But the price for normal life is 146.900 dollars. These costs strictly cover the investigations before surgery and actual surgery, but we don’t hold this amount at all.

Now, Anya is in Romania and tries to live a normal life, she is in a good mood and plays with her brother. Within every moment, we hope that she will soon begin a normal life without the threat that the heart will turn against her.

Any donation will represent an enormous help for their hope and little girl’s saving.
