Delfina’s Garden – Relocating her Greenhouses

Hi All,

We are launching a gofundme for Delfina and her greenhouse business. For those living in Bocas del Toro who don’t already know Delfina, she is an elderly local lady who started selling her much loved plants, herbs, flowers and trees in the park on Fridays in order to supplement her pension. As with so many people on the islands, the cost of living has increased with tourism, but their pensions have not and she was finding more days at the end of her month than her pension was able to pay for.

Instead of getting into debt, she embarked on starting her own business at the age of 69! Every year for four years she was able to put her love into her plants and sell them and build her business, but when covid hit, she was no longer able to sell in the park and the property that she grows her plants in is undergoing a lot of changes and her greenhouses are in need of some repairs and relocation.

Recently, Delfina lost one of her brothers to Covid which sadly has made her more reluctant to venture far from her house and so we are looking to relocate her business to her own yard which will need to be secured and made comfortable for her going forward.

We are kindly requesting for donations to:-

1. Raise the area in her yard so that when the tide rises, it is not flooded with salt water by laying clay and stones.

2. Install posts and fence in the yard to ensure that her plants remain safe and protected

3. Relocate her greenhouse structures and re-plasticate them as well as

4. Build a small ‘bodega’ store room and covered area where she can work protected from the sun and lockable for her gardening tools and equipment.

With the help of the community, we are hoping to achieve this in stages over the next two to three months so that Delfina can continue to put love and joy into her plant growing business and can remain an example for anyone who sets out to achieve something, proving they can do so no matter how old they are.
