Summary -

On March 28th, the province of Surigao del Sur declared a province-wide lockdown for 30 days. This means all non-essential work has to stop. This measure puts the most vulnerable families, who earn less than $5 a day and rely on the informal economy to survive are at immediate danger of not having any food during the lockdown. Our Local Ministry - Good Samaritan Ministry is responding by making emergency relief packs for distribution to the most vulnerable people to ensure they have the means to survive and keep their families safe.

Challenge -

The Philippines has massive poverty and inequity. Over 25 Million People live on less than USD 8 a day per household, and many of whom are dependent on the informal economy just so they can survive. As the Surigao del Sur Province enters a 30-day lockdown to combat the spread of COVID-19, 1 in 4 families will not have access to any income and will rely on the government for support. However, with very limited resources and dealing with a health emergency, the local governments are already at breaking point.

Solution -

We are providing emergency relief packs to the most vulnerable communities and especially those where Girls face the biggest risk during the lockdown. One Pack per family will contain the following items; 2.5 Kilo Rice (White and Brown) 5 x Canned Sardines 5 x Instant Noodles 2 x Snack Packs 1 x Chick Peas Canned 1 x Mushrooms Canned 1 x 250 gr Mongo Beans 1 x Cooking Oil 3 x Body Soap 2 x Bathroom Tissue 1 x Clothes Detergent 1 x Bleach 1 x Toothpaste 1 x Washable Face Mask

Long-Term Impact -

The Philippines has one of the highest levels of poverty across Asia. Over 25 million live in acute poverty. With the heightened impact of the COVID-19 outbreak, this puts the already vulnerable at danger of not having enough food and thus expose themselves to the risk of contracting and spreading the COVID-19 amongst their already packed communities.
