The IVHQ South Africa volunteer program has volunteer placements located
near central Cape Town. These placements are based in the
Capricorn/Vrygrond community in Muizenberg, which is approximately 30 to
40 minutes from the Cape Town city center.
Volunteer programs begin on the first and third Monday of each month. I intend to be teaching in South Africa for 3 solid weeks from 24 Jun – 15 Jul. 2019.
The aim of the Teaching project in South Africa is to provide assistance within public schools in low-income communities in Cape Town, to support struggling students and help ease the workload of teachers within under-resourced classrooms.
As a Teaching volunteer in Cape Town, I will be placed in one of three public primary schools, where I will work alongside local teachers or other volunteers. Typical subjects taught at these schools include English, Mathematics, Life Skills, Social Studies, Art and Physical studies, however there is a heavy emphasis on English. I will be either tutoring for 1-hour blocks, or assisting a local teacher in the classroom, and follow a set curriculum with work books. I may also be asked to help organize other activities for the students, including sports.
