Butabika village finally got its recycling group when they registered it as a Community-Based Organization (CBO) named Butabika Community Recycling Group (B.C.R.G). We stopped burning the plastics to produce construction products when the group failed to fabricate a standard boiler. Rather than make one, we opted for a shredder.

The wheel shredder is a popular machine on the internet. Famous for making light work of heavy objects from car engines to frying pans, it can be retooled and scaled down to meet community needs. Shredded plastic has become a marketable commodity which we intend to build on.

The machine specifications are 2 ft x 3ft x 4 ft, with 5 wheels powered by a low-power 1000KVS electric motor. We need it to be movable so that it can be hired out to the neighboring community recycling groups. The cost of the machine is USD 2,500.00 fully furbished and fabricated.

The ground was wet under their feet, the water was deep rising to their knees, and residents were in panic as the levels kept rising. Never in living memory had an event like this been seen before. The year was 2020 and the lockdown was still holding. The waters swelled and Lake Victoria broke her banks. The residents of the unplanned lake shore community found themselves looking for higher ground.

It would be weeks before the waters returned to the old levels. The residents of the small unplanned community on the lake shore had been displaced and moved to higher ground. Collection services had been discontinued since the workers did not make the essential workers list and household waste was piling up after months of not being collected.

It was during this time that Phillip got the idea to start a group from within the community to deal with the community challenges. He mobilized the local youths and put them to work collecting the waste, especially plastic bottles. These would be reduced down into alternative products including pavers.
