Climate Change & Human Wildlife Conflict

In 2017 I started a project in my homeland Laikipia East in Aljabet near Rumuruti. I had lots of hope as it had the potential to sustain me and my family in the challenging economic times in Kenya. Having done thorough research, I embarked on farming Vegetables which had a lot of demand in the market. I managed to harvest the first two seasons successfully until the third when climatic conditions affected the weather patterns in the area. This could be a result of the ongoing climate changes taking place around the globe. 10 years ago the area had abundant rainfall and therefore I could harvest rainwater for domestic and agricultural use. The water from a well which was my only source of irrigation that I was using dried up and therefore I could not sustain the production of vegetables any longer. The dry spell continued into 2019 and 2020. To make matters worse, some tanks that I was using to store water for irrigation were demolished by an invasion of a herd of elephants from the nearby Rumuruti forest. The funds will go towards the purchase of a new tank, deepening the current well in order to source for water for irrigation and also purchase of a new greenhouse cover.
