The Teuk Saat Project
MISSION: Distribute water filters to 50 Cambodian families in poverty, to empower them and improve their wellbeing.
VISION: A Cambodia where all have access to clean drinking water.
3 Teenagers With 1 Aim
Surprise, surprise! This project is run by 3 ordinary high school students. Our names are Rachel, Christina, and Jabez, and we are running this as part of our Global Perspective Course Project, and because of our passion and desire to make a difference in the country we live in. The countries that represent us are United States, South Korea, and Singapore, respectively. We all live in Cambodia and study in an international school - Hope International School, a unique place where all cultures come together. However, we are separated! Christina is in the Siem Reap Hope Campus, and Rachel and Jabez are in the Phnom Penh Hope Campus. This means we are cooperating on this project completely online.
Why are we doing this?
Our idea initially came after seeing the need for clean water in Cambodia. Clean drinking water is necessary for life, and knowing that millions of people in Cambodia do not have access to it impacted us and allowed us to see the work needed to improve this. In Cambodia, a quarter of the population doesn’t have access to clean water. This has vast negative effects on people and causes illness and disease. Sanitation-related illnesses are the second biggest killer of children under five and claim thousands of lives each year. Seeing all this moved us to take action and to contribute to solving this issue.
To improve any situation, funds and resources are needed. Only when the Cambodians have access to facilities, can they have clean water, and improve their livelihoods. The people most vulnerable to this issue are the ones who are the poorest. They cannot afford to have safe drinking water and do not know the importance of it. Therefore, there is a great need of resources in order to improve this issue, and we must be willing to give.
Unfortunately, the enormity of this problem is not well known. It is a massive issue in Cambodia, that will take the combined effort of many people to improve. That is why we need you, and others, to raise awareness and help contribute to providing for those in need.
What are we doing?
We are working with a local organization in Cambodia, Resource Development International, which produces water filters. Using the money you donate, we will be buying water filters from this organization and partnering with them to distribute them to a local community in need, which the organization is currently determining. We will not be giving it away for free, but instead subsidizing the water filters for a much lower price of 2$, in order to give the recipients dignity and responsibility, and address the issue in a culturally appropriate manner. Each water filter costs $20, and if we reach our target of $1000, we will be able to buy 50 water filters which will then empower 50 families. Any donation helps, and 20$ would be enough to give a family clean water for years to come.
