Summary

Chenda kalaha means walk slowly with a mission to giving slum women and girl’s voices and participation in development with regards to clean environment, health rights, education and economic empowerment enabling them lead dignified lives.

Through this project, chenda kalaha community based organization aims to support more than 1000 girls in Kibera Slums to complete high school through rights awareness programs, educational scholarship, sports , hygiene, environment and sanitation. Girls in Kibera face many challenges; lack of basic needs like pads and panties, manipulation and sexual harassment, lack of hope to further their education due to poverty and most of all lack of people/platforms with whom to share their problems.

Over 500 single mothers and widows face very hard time in kibera to cater for their basic needs like paying schools fees, house rent food among others for their families. This project will respond to these needs.

Chenda kalaha has developed programs such as Feeding Program, Garbage Collection Program, Computer classes, Beauty/Hair-dressing Vocational center with the mission of inspiring and equipping the both women’s and youth of the community with the skills and opportunities to be Change Agents.

Challenge

70% of girls who drop out of school in Kibera are due to early pregnancy. The problem is rooted in social and economical poverty, pushing the girls to desperate conditions to look for men or accept men's advances so that they can provide basic needs not just for themselves but for their families as well. These girls in many situations have no-one to give them hope and they keep all these frustrations to themselves. This project aims to develop adolescent in school and out of school.

Solution

Talking Boxes will provide step one sharing platforms where through anonymous notes, girls will share what issues they are facing, leading to Speak Out forums, referrals, counseling and mentoring sessions by paralegals. Volleyball sports will create safe spaces to play and talk. Educational scholarships will be provided for post primary education and vocational scholarships for the out-of-school girl. School supplies, pads, panties and life skills training will be for all as needs demand. We want to reach out to many more by realizing our dream of building a vocational school teaching tailoring and providing child care for young mothers.

This fundraising campaign has a specific goal funding: funding the new House Help training center, This training center will equip unemployed women with the right skill set for the House Help and Laundry job (cooking, cleaning, taking care of children, etc.), aiming to break the poverty cycle in the kibera slums Kenya also liquid soap making beadwork and carpet knitting training by use of recycled plastics and polythene papers . Before linking our trainees with a potential employer, we will also provide financial education for our trainees to learn how to save money and aspire to more in the future.

My colleagues and I have interviewed potential employers to understand what they expect from a House Help and then designed our Training Center according to those expectations.

The collected funds will serve to buy the needed equipment to carry on with the training and also to advertise the program to reach as many trainees as possible.
