The Chain of Hope Greece founded in 2016 in order to support cancer patients and their caregivers.
It is really WORTH finding resources to continue with greater intensity what we already do.
The Chain of Hope Greece relies only on its own resources and private donations, not government grants.
The moment that CHAIN of HOPE was BORN ...
Hara was diagnosed with cancer in 2016.
Hara is gone, but she lives on through her husband's actions and deeds. She was a source of inspiration from the very first day of their acquaintance.
So, he turned the grief and mourning from the loss of his wife into a zest for life and an offer for all those who are struggling with cancer.
As he characteristically says: “Hara, for all of us who loved her, still lives and guides us. Now, in my own steps, I always feel her next to me”
Michalis Dardaneliotis is the Founder and President of the Chain of Hope Greece
Chain of Hope Greece is a Non-Profit, founded for the purpose of supporting people with cancer.
We provide:
- Psychological Support Services
- Seminars
- Collection of Medicines
- Facilitate Cancer Patients inside and outside the Hospital
- Individual and Group Sessions
- Cancer Patients Transfers
For the first time in Greece, cancer patients are able to go to and from hospitals by taxi, FREE of charge
What We Do
We hold information campaigns and sensitization of the general public, but also actions of solidarity and support to cancer patients, their environment and caregivers.
One of our actions is the collection of medicines, which can be offered by anyone during the events we participate in at festivals or bazaars.
People can offer medicines that they don't need any more or no longer use. We, at The Chain of Hope Greece, collect them and a volunteer pharmacist divides them into categories.
We donate hospital medicines to hospitals. With the rest we cover the needs of cancer patients who do not have the opportunity to buy medicines and turn to the Chain of Hope to meet their needs, and we offer the rest of them to Social Pharmacies.
Chain of Hope and Psychological Support
We receive phone calls every day. We listen carefully to the patient or caregiver who calls, and often make appointments for one or more sessions.
We do meetings with cancer patients who are located in the province in order to receive support at their place of residence.
We approach each case from the standpoint of human and not of the scientist. We listen them carefully, answer their questions, and share our experiences with them. Finally, they feel that they are not alone, sometimes we cry together. That's the hardest part.
The difficulties we are facing led to serve fewer cancer patients than those who need our help.
The Next Steps of the Chain of Hope Greece
I. Program FREE hospitality for cancer patients who come from the province for their treatments
The reality
We found that there is a "gap" in the need to accommodate patients who come from the province to do their treatments.
Treatments become even more arduous and economically unbearable when patients have to move from a remote village or island.
What is certain is that 99 out of 100 times, they must be accompanied by one of their family member.
Many times, even if they have acquaintances in Athens, it is difficult to stay there. In the other hand, many of them are not able to pay hotel for so long.
We all know that cancer patients are a vulnerable group, and the risks involved in deteriorating their health conditions depend very much on the quality of life.
So,
At the moment we decide to rent and equip 25 apartments in order to offer hospitality to cancer patients and their caregivers for FREE.
It is definitely sure that the expenses to start and to maintain those guest houses are huge, but we expect to meet the hosting needs of 6,200 cases every year, at least.
II. We offer FREE transfers of cancer patients for their treatments to and from hospitals
Actinotherapy last at least 1 month and is daily
We are looking for solutions to be able to transfer more cancer patients every day
The reality
The cost to transfer cancer patients to and from hospitals to do their scheduled treatments, is very high. Especially for patients who do actinotherapy which are daily and at least last one month.
The minimum of money each patient has to spend is 30 euros per day for the 25 days of each month, is 750 euros at least. Especially for patients who are retired, this cost often exceeds the pension they receive.
The Chain of Hope Greece tries to meet this need by offering FREE transfers, starting of course, from people on very low incomes.
So,
Our plan is to buy three small-displacement cars and we will employ staff (professional drivers) to meet the needs as many cancer patients as possible every day.
* We started the transfers in January 2020 with our own cars and so far we have transported 280 patients
III. FREE tickets for those who come to Athens or Thessaloniki from the province for their treatments
Our plan is to cooperate with airlines and shipping companies, and offer free tickets for those who can not affort this cost
The economic crisis has exhausted many families across the country. We understand how difficult it is for cancer patients to cope with the travel expenses for their treatments.
So,
We decide to cooperate with airlines and shipping companies to get low prices and we will offer these tickets for those who cannot afford this cost, for FREE.

Our achievement in the midst of COVID-19
On 16th of April 2020, it was officially announced that cancer patients who come from the countryside can stay in a specific hotel indicated by the government, and go to the hospitals to make their treatments.
The announcement was made by the Deputy Minister of Civil Protection and Crisis Management, Nikos Hardalias.

Due to the pandemic, Cancer Patients who come from the province to Athens for their treatments cannot stay with relatives or friends and the hotels remain closed due to the restrictive measures for covid-19.
We have identified the problem, we made it known, and the Ministry of Health responded immediately!
Is the cancer still the disease of our age?
When we hear about cancer, the first thing we all think is: "it will never happen to me" or "it's something far away from me."
On the other hand, when it knocks on our door, we say, "My God, Why Me?" This "Why" is answered when all of us in the Chain of Hope respond with Creativity and Love"
In Greece, about 30,000 people get sick every year and 26,000 die. The main cause of death for men is lung cancer and then prostate cancer, while for women it is breast cancer. Men are twice as likely to die as women. Which has the lowest survival rates is liver cancer.
Greece is ranked 19th in the 27 countries of the European Union as an indicator of patient health care. The treating doctors estimate that for Greece 80% of cancers can be treated with radiotherapy and unfortunately the wait for this treatment reaches up to 3 to 6 months.
